Ok, I just created the file you requested, here it is, please let me know about anything, thanks in advanced!!

You are not going to get very far if the recovered data is like this. :(

The file you posted consists of ONLY 00's.

I hope that this is only somehow "a glitch in the matrix" and that the rest of the file actually contains data .

You should first thing calculate the MD5 of the image file you have in your hands and compare it with the result of using this:

http://www.edenprime.com/software/epAllZeroHashCalculator.htm

A suitable tool to calculate the hash on the image is http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/hash_my_files.html

Got it, it's actually the same, what can I get from this? thanks in advanced!!!

NOTHING. :(

I will translate:

  1. EITHER
  2. your friend used dd wrongly :w00t:
    OR
  3. the whatever he dd'ed was all 00's
    OR
  4. an unknown error happpened
    OR
  5. your actual disk is all 00's.

I don't really want to somehow take advantage of your misfortune till now, BUT if you quickly review this thread you will see how it goes like this:

saman0suke: I need help and advice for ....

jaclaz: first thing you should use tool A using it along procedure B

saman0suke: OK, I used tool A with procedure C then

jaclaz: well, as said you should use tool A along procedure B

saman0suke: OK, I had a friend using maybe tool D along an unknown procedure, here is the result

jaclaz: result is no good

Your turn.

Well, I can't tell if he made a mistake or something, he really knows about linux tools and all that since its job is about working on that environment, I asked him to create another image since he can leave the hard drive scanning at his work where they have like a "cold room" for the servers, disks, etc, that's why I asked this to him, maybe with a second image we could do something, but to be honest, I don't think is either a problem with the user or dd, more with the disk itself :( I'm sure he used dd since he told me a few days ago, maybe If I ask him the steps he made so I can tell you, and make sure he's not skipping a step, or doing it in the wrong way...

I really don't want to make a case out of it :), but really, if your friend used "plain" dd on a disk that has problems, he cannot be this great Linux expert, as *any* Linux user knows (or should know) about two specific dd versions for recovery:

  1. ddrescue: http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/ddrescue.html
  2. dd_rescue: http://www.garloff.de/kurt/linux/ddrescue/

Ok, then let's do the following, please guide me about what to do with ddrescue or dd_rescue, and I will ask him to do it, problem of doing it myself is that I wouldn't like to let the computer turned on for days doing the scan, and If I save the progress day by day I will never finish :( thanks a LOT for the patience!!

My personal preference is for dd_rescue:

http://www.garloff.de/kurt/linux/ddrescue/

used TOGETHER with dd_rhelp

http://www.kalysto.org/utilities/dd_rhelp/index.en.html

the latter is very well documented and extremely simple to use, in practice it takes the manual intervention out from using dd_rescue directly.
