Installing windows 7 from usb flash problem

Recommended Posts

try to install windows 7 from usb flash drive using splitted windows image, setup will get stuck at "copying windows files 100%" ,when using WIM file setup will go fine.

using usb hard drive will have no problem.

I need to use splitted image because setup will start expanding windows files faster.

some details:

- WIM file 8.64 GB

- SWM files 9 files at 1024 MB except last one 646 MB

- Flash drive: 16 GB Sony Storage Media

* Tested on 3 different systems

Can you expand (pardon me the pun ;)) on this?

Which source do you have (in .SWM files)?

This is usually OEM.... and AFAIK there is no explicit provision for .SWM files in the WinsetupFromUSBWithGUI (which I presume is what you tested, and - still presume - in the newest 1.0 beta7 version), it is likely that is the actual .SWM mechanism that somehow checks the install media.

Easiest would be to procure yourself a stick for which there is a "flipping removable bit" tool (or verify if there is one for your current stick) and flip the bit.

I prepared a generalized image for both X86 and X64 of Windows 7 Ultimate which became a large image 8.64GB used as install.wim in sources folder, used with no problems on usb hard drive and flash drive the only thing is on some systems expanding windows files will not start for long what i mean it will remain at 0% for around 25 minutes so i assumed that is because the size of the image. i splitted the image to 1024MB then replaced install.wim in sources folder with install.swm, install2.swm,.... install9.swm at first tested it on usb HDD it worked very well and fast, when tried it on usb flash did not work and always stuck on copying windows files 100%.

thanks jaclaz for your quick response.
