TmEE
So, basically I want all my icons to be arranged by type, but for example when I mess around with folder options or something things revert back to arrange by name.I've noticed that once I arrange stuff by type enough it will start applying it on newly opened things...I'm wondering if there's any tweak to force default file arrangement ? (but preserves already set stuff, like desktop)
CharlesF
I'm using IconLayout 1.0.0.1 from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit, for years with no problem. It's a dll (14 KB) adding 2 lines in right-click on any folder:- "Save Desktop Icon Layout"- "Restore Desktop Icon Layout"It saves the desktop icons position in a registry key:[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\IconLayout]You can restore it at anytime.HTHCharles. TmEE
It works for desktop only or other stuff too ? desktop stays fine unless I change resolution, or go in safe mode I tried looking through the registry but I could not notice anything regarding icon arrangement stuff... i'd be quite happy if icons stayed arranged by type rather than anything else (windows seems to default to arrange by name). CharlesF
It works for desktop only or other stuff too ?For desktop only (and not even for the Quicklaunch) I have sometimes every icons messed after a crash, and use it for that.I thought folders arrangement can be set from Folder options -> Display
TmEE
Desktop restore does come in handyRegarding Folder Options, on XP it works perfectly... when I apply settings of current folder to all folders, so happens, and file arrangement is also passed. But on 98 it seems everything gets passed except file arrangement, which gets reset to arrange by name :/I wonder where are all the view settings stored ? DESKTOP.INI files ? CharlesF
I wonder where are all the view settings stored ? DESKTOP.INI files ?I would say in registry:[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StreamMRU][HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams]Every key (= number) keeps infos for a folder.
