Mouse pointer slowly shifting

I found a nice "vertical mouse" amongst discarded items. The problem is (common on optical mice) sometimes the pointer would slowly shift by itself in a constant direction which is very annoying (and the reason it was left aside).

I know a mouse is cheap but the question is... can this be solved ? Is it due to a dust somewhere inside or an imperfection in the diode or in the transparent plastics ? A heating component ? Has anyone solved this before ?

Cleaning the lens and using a pad usually fixes it:

There are reports about the actual LED colour/wavelength, but I wouldn't go as far as that:

From the mouth of the wolf:

Pointer moving by itself

A reflective surface may cause pointer drift. Put the VerticalMouse on a non reflective mouse pad, such as a fabric pad.

Logitech made a patch for it's mice some 10 years ago or so, they were just filtering and smoothing out the mouse movement. Generic windows drivers will not do that.

Just wanted to ad that, ow, and guys, cleaning the lens won't solve much in this case ;).

Thanks punto, I never knew that.

In the past I always installed the Logitec driver, since I liked the "Scroll-wheel=double-click" feature,

but after having problems with that driver and (I believe) XP SP3 I uninstalled it.

(Can't remember the exact problem, but I do remember it became a real nuisance)

Greetz,

Peter.
