Need help with 232 connector (for 7200.11 hard drives)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have seagate hard disk 7200.11 with 0 lba problem.

following few guides whic I find in the internet, I bought the nessecery as can be seen here:

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/128807- ... 0011-hdds/

how and where do I connect the wires to the TTL adapter?

see the pictures and please tell met whic pin should I connect with a wire.

I assume the board came with a manual that could tell you?

(Can't use MSFN-the link you've posted as it's incomplete...)

(...and shouldn't you just post this in the Seagate BSY/LBA0-problem thread?)

If not: what type of IC is on it?

Look up its datasheet with Google and see what pins of the chip run to wich pin at the header.

Greetz,

Peter.

Hi peter,

what is the datesheet? and what is lc?

By the way, Ctrl + Z does not give me F3 T> in the terminal.

What do I do wrong? or when I will connect the adapter as it should be, the terminal will also work as it should be too?

Many Thanks!

IC stands for "Integrated Circuit" AKA a "Chip".

I can see one chip on the PCB (that small black thing with the 16 shiny pins) right

between the RS232 connector and the 3-pin header.

This chip should have markings on it (like MAX222/MAX232A/...); what does it say?

Enter these markings (the type-number) into Google along with the phrase "Datasheet".

But first, try to read its markings (I can't see it in the images provided) and tell

us here.

But... did the board just come as is, without any manual of some kind?

Where did you get it?

Maybe more information can be found at the website where you've bought it?

Greetz,

Peter.

It's always hard to judge when I've only got images and I can't verify it with

a multimeter, but it *looks* like these are the connections:

You might want to check yourself, by following the tracks on the PCB (if possible

with a multimeter); this is the pinout of the chip in question:

max3232.gif

Remember that (after you've verified the connections), you have to connect the RX

of the board to the TX of the drive and the TX of the board to the RX of the drive.

If you wish, you can first do a test-run, by connecting the convertor to your PC's

COM-port and applying power to it and connecting the TX to the RX of the board (thus

creating a "Loop-back") and see if you get characters echood back when typing on

the keyboard in HyperTerminal.

Greetz,

Peter.

Hi Peter,

Thank you very much for your help!

I wish everyone would be like you! :)

I plug 2 of the 3 wires that I have (whit- don't know what it is, Black - RX, Red- TX. Am I right?)

I followd after the guid here:

but the terminal does not respond.

When I hit Ctrl + z does not appear on the scren the letters: "F3 T>m". is this the right sequence?

It looks like nothing happen at all.

What should I do?

Many Thanks Peter and have a great weekend!

Often the RX- and TX-lines accidently swapped, so you might want to try it the other way round.

This is how (I think) the convertor should be connected to the drive:

Don't forget to also apply power to the drive when trying to communicate to it.

Peter.

Hi Peter,

Thank you very much for your great help!

I did the actions as you guied, but nothing happend.

I connect all the wires (Which I hope that I did it right: The black wire is GND, the red is TX and the white is DX), and connect it to the terminal, but I don't see any respond (I connected sata power to the hard drive).

Nothing happend when I hit the sequence Ctrl + Z (Somthing like F3 T> should appear after that but it didn't).

I switch the wires for case that I plug it wrong but still nothing.

I can't think about what I do wrong.

Is the connector doesn't do its purpose?

What can I do?

Many Thank!!

The black wire is GND, the red is TX and the white is DX), and connect it to the terminal, but I don't see any respond (I connected sata power to the hard drive).

There are FOUR wires connected to the interface.

Put aside the disk for the moment.

Connect POWER to the interface, which means that you have to connect the wires 3.3/5V and Ground to a +3.3V/0 power supply (or battery).

Connect the two other cables together (Tx and Rx).

You are doing a loopback test, which is meant to verify that the interface is working, read here:

If I'm not mistaken, there's an indicator-LED on your board (just

where it says "POWER" on the PCB) that should light up when you

apply power to it.

Does it light up?

If so: when you tie the RX- and TX-pins of the board to each other

(creating a loopback), open HyperTerminal and type a few characters

on the keyboard, are they being echood back in the terminal?

Greetz,

Peter.
