Win 98SE: 2xExplorer (Older Version) - xplorer2 (Newer Version)

In the "Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE" list there are links to xplorer2 PRO and Lite versions. A few months ago I tried the xplorer2 Lite version and just didn't care for it, seemed a bit too complicated, since all I was after was having two Explorer windows to use every so often. Well, the company mentions about a link to their older version 2xExplorer but they try to discourage you from going there, they want you to work with the new version. I downloaded the "old" version and for Windows 98SE, it's a nice little program. Just thought I'd mention it in case some other Win 98SE users would also like to check out 2xExplorer. The link is still working and you might want to give it a try or just download and save a copy somewhere. I had no trouble figuring out how to use 2xExplorer immediately and it is a simple two window Explorer type program. May also be OK for other OSs if you didn't like the newer xplorer2 version. I'm not saying xplorer2 isn't a good two window Explorer program, it probably is ... I just found the older version (2xExplorer) easier to work with and understand.

Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.x, Windows 2000, Windows XP

*** NEW: Since I first posted about 2xExplorer on Feb 2nd, I have since found out about another program, thanks to MDGx. It's called FreeCommander ... I have tried it and also like that program. I now have both programs on my computer, will be trying out both for now. I still like 2xExplorer to use for a quick two pane Explorer program. Might just keep both. I am using the older version [2008.06c] that MDGx says still works 100% with all 9x OSes.

It seems that FreeCommander hasn't been mentioned...

I use the xplorer² few years, and really it is a good file manager. Light, fast and with many extra features.

I think the tool bar with buttons useless, the default installation, but after you configure them to your liking, looks great!

here for personal use, I changed the Windows registry, and set xplorer² to my default file manager, and always run when I click "my computer" icon or any folder, always open with xplorer²

a suggestion, for those who use the win98 with win95 shell, the explorer win95 is very limited in functionality, adding, the xplorer² to this setting a good alternative

I use and love Xplorer2 too but I find it a bit slow to open. It often hangs a few seconds the time to update the icons or something...

Beside that it's great and it solved the problem of moving/deleting large numbers of files long before a fix was issued.

Thanks for the discussion on the newer version of xplorer2. As I stated earlier, the older version (2xExplorer) was more to my liking. It does open fast and I was just after a double pane program. One thing I really like since I keep all my hidden folders hidden is that I don't have to switch back and forth to see the folders anymore. They can stay hidden but 2xExplorer will show them anyway so you can work with them. I'm sure xplorer2 also does that ... maybe one day, I'll give it another try ... 2xExplorer just seemed a little bit easier to work with at the time.

I like this little app and would like to make it my default.

PROBLEMCHYLD ... I was interested to see if anyone would reply to your last post about "making" 2xExplorer the default over Windows Explorer. However, I found this question asked in the FAQs section for 2xExplorer and the reply from the 2xExplorer developer, I guess. He doesn't recommend doing that but does make a suggestion.

A. I wouldn't recommend replacing the standard explorer altogether, but it's very easy to add a "verb" that will give you the chance to open folders with 2xExplorer. From explorer edit the "File Type" associations (View | Folder Options | File Types tab). It's not very intuitive, but if you scroll down you'll find a Folder "file type", which you can Edit as usual. Create a new verb e.g. "2xOpen" and edit its action. This should have "c:\YourPath\2xExplorer.exe" "%1" as the new command line (including the quotation marks, too). Now whenever you right click on a folder, there's going to be a "2xOpen" item in the context menu.

There was another forum site (Google search) that someone asked the same question and the answer looked interesting but the forum isn't up at present.
