Windows 98 Live Cd Project (Update)

@betaluva

Beatzero, how did you go with windows95live ?

is indeed possible to create Windows 95 LiveCD, based on this project, but will not know if compatibility, stability ... hardware detection

Currently I have tested the "KERNELEX" to the project, and had good results, only tested with Firefox 3.5.7, and work fine.

But I found some disadvantages (for Win98LiveCD projet only) require a lot of dependencies, leaving the image with approximately 100MB

Another plan I have, add support for multimedia, I made some of experiments, but with little success, there is often the unfortunate error "MMSYSTEM002" This is a classic error in win98 :realmad:

Finally, the ideas keep coming to mind :angel , but I not have free time to develop

@kamahl

you can set the source directory to anywhere, providd it has the win98 subfolder. Personally, I put it in the winbuilder directory

good tip, thank's :thumbup

If this helps...

Make sure you get the proper letter for the WinME setup CD-ROM [in this case X].

Make sure the 2nd line below is run only from native DOS, before Windows UI loads.

EXTRACT/Y X:\WIN9X\PRECOPY1.CAB /L %winbootdir%\SYSTEM KOMMCTRL.DLL

IF EXIST %winbootdir%\SYSTEM\KOMMCTRL.DLL REN %winbootdir%\SYSTEM\KOMMCTRL.DLL COMMCTRL.DLL

EXTRACT.EXE must be present somewhere in the path [otherwise must specify full path = driveletter:\directoryname ] for this to work.

Edit

FYI...

If you run commands that involve windir/winbootdir variables from native DOS, you must use %winbootdir% variable, because in native DOS %windir% doesn't work.

If I may make a suggestion...

You could add a small free ISO burning command line tool that works from within Win9x/ME, so one doesn't need to have another NTx based OS [2000/XP/2003/etc], only to do just that.

Options I know of...

1. Malek Tips:

http://www.malektips.com/xp_dos_0029.html

This requires to d/l the free Win2003 RK Tools package and extract cdburn.exe , which may or may not work from a 9x OS [DOS box]:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=4544

[if any1 can test cdburn.exe with Win98/98SE/ME, pls post here results. Tx. ;)]

2. mkisofs [free GPL]:

http://freshmeat.net/projects/mkisofs/

And I'm sure there are more similar free tools out there.

As a bonus, this is a small free tool that creates bootable CD-ROMs from the DOS command line [adds BOOT.BIN to the root directory of the CD ISO]:

Bart's Bootable CD-ROM:

http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/

Same, I have not tested this tool with Win98/ME.

Almost forgot...

* ImgBurn v2.5.0.0 32-bit CD/DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray burning tool for Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7 creates/erases/(re)writes to CD-R(W)/DVD-R(W)/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray drives, creates/extracts to/writes from ISO CD/DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray images, supports all popular standards and most CD/DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray drives, includes command line parameters for unattended burn from batch files, highly customizable:

http://www.imgburn.com/

Direct download [2.06 MB, freeware]:

http://www.imgburn.com/?act=download

* InfraRecorder 32-bit for Windows 9x/2000/ME/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7 creates/erases/(re)writes to CD-R(W)/DVD-R(W)/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray drives, creates/extracts to/writes from ISO CD/DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray dual-layer images, supports all popular standards and most CD/DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray drives, saves audio tracks to WAV, WMA, OGG + MP3, highly customizable (free GPL):

http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/

- InfraRecorder 0.46.2 Unicode for Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7 [3.23 MB]:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/infrarecorder/ir0462.exe

- InfraRecorder 0.45 ANSI for Windows 9x/ME [2.95 MB]:

I got a question in running your script and it stops accidentally.

Run - Processed section [Clean] in file: [%BaseDir%\Projects\WIN98LIVECD\Finish\1 Create Image\01-SuperFloppy Image.Script]

ExtractFile - [WIN98.IMG] to: [%BaseDir%\Temp\WIN98\]

FileCopy - Copied [%BaseDir%\Projects\Win98LiveCD\Programs\Settings\*.reg] to: [%BaseDir%\APP_TMP\]

ShellExecute: [Hide] using: [%BaseDir%\Projects\Tools\uumerge.exe] with parameters: [ -merge -nice "%BaseDir%\APP_TMP\*.reg" "%BaseDir%\Target\WIN98LIVECD\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SET.REG"]

"Compressing WINDOWS Folder..."

ShellExecute: [Hide] using: [%BaseDir%\Projects\Tools\7za.exe] with parameters: [a "%BaseDir%\Work\WIN98\Windows.7z" -y "%BaseDir%\Target\WIN98LIVECD\WINDOWS\"]

ShellExecute: [Hide] using: [%BaseDir%\Projects\Tools\7za.exe] with parameters: [a "%BaseDir%\Work\WIN98\Windows.7z" -y "%BaseDir%\Target\WIN98LIVECD\*.*"]

ShellExecute: [Hide] using: [%BaseDir%\Projects\Tools\7za.exe] with parameters: [a "%BaseDir%\Work\WIN98\Windows.7z" -y "%BaseDir%\Target\WIN98LIVECD\Programas\"]

ShellExecute: [Hide] using: [cmd.exe] with parameters: [/c ""%BaseDir%\Projects\Tools\VDK\VDK.EXE" OPEN * "%BaseDir%\Temp\WIN98\WIN98.IMG" /L:M /RW""]

FileCopy - Failed to copy [%BaseDir%\Work\*.*] to: [M:\]: The directory name is invalid.

Halt

Attached please find the log file.

How can I complete this project? Thanks in advance.

@gothku

This is because the virtual drive "M:\" was not loaded, "VDK.EXE".

-check the letter "M'' is available on your system, if not, change to another letter in the "Finish\1 Create Image\01-SuperFloppy Image.Script.

try restarting your computer ...

I also noticed that other projects based on that use WinBuilder vdk.exe, this can cause

I now run this project on another XP machine ....

'm here and I look forward feedback

I changed to another drive name O but it still fails.

Log is attached.

I only have harddisk C: and D: and CD drive at E:

So it should be possible to simulate O: or M: by vdk, right?

Or is it possible to untick the box for finish/1 Create image and complete the job manually? So how can I do it manually?

Thank you.

Added that I boot a quite clean XP SP3 to do this operation.

I do it a folder called "1"

I open cmd prompt.

C:\1\projects\Tools\Vdk>vdk.exe open C:\1\Temp\Win98\WIN98.IMG /L:O /R

Virtual Disk Driver for Windows version 3.1

http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/

Invalid target disk number 'C:\1\Temp\Win98\WIN98.IMG' is specified.

What does it mean?

The compilation is ok after following your script. Thanks.

I see the welcome screen and then a lot of extracting Windows/... blah blah blah and the welcome screen shows again.

But finally I reached a black screen in QEMU when using MobaLiveCD but not to Windows 98 desktop.

It seems stopped.

How come?
