Jim624 Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 have a WRT54G router.....suddenly today my pages started loading slowly, I called the ISP, they had me bypass the modem and run trace route....all the latency's were 25 and lower and when running strictly off the modem the speed was fantastic. When I reconnect the router the following is what I getMicrosoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]© Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.C:\Documents and Settings\Jim>tracert missoula.speedtest.bresnan.netTracing route to missoula.speedtest.bresnan.net [69.146.16.254]over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 1 ms 3 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1 2 * * * Request timed out. 3 315 ms 303 ms 311 ms host-69-144-26-145.static.bresnan.net [69.144.26.145] 4 332 ms 379 ms 342 ms mslmtfh1hb7-SO-0-3-0-U0.int.bresnan.net [69.144.26.69] 5 322 ms 306 ms 295 ms mslmtfh1svspd.int.bresnan.net [69.146.16.254]Trace complete.C:\Documents and Settings\Jim>My question is, why are the latencies so high when connecting through the router ?? And what is the fix for it ???
tain Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 First thing to try is rebooting the router and ensuring it has adequate ventilation. If that doesn't help, we'll need look at the configuration.
jcarle Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 Also, depending on the specific revision of the WRT54G, you may want to look into replacing the firmware with something like Tomato which offers better performance.
davismccarn Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 Most cable internet companies will require you to turn the modem off for two minutes+ before it will connect to a new device. Did you do that? And/or, did somebody clone your mac address to the router aeons ago to get it working? If they did, reset the router to defaults, turn the modem off for two minutes, and see if it isn't a lot better.
