Bluetooth and Windows 98

I recently purchased something called an Aircable Host XR - a USB-connected bluetooth transmitter - for use on a win-xp system. It came with absolutely zero software (no CD, no drivers, etc). There apparently is no drivers needed when connecting it to an XP system.

In the support section, they say that I have two choices for "older" Windows OS's: BlueSoleil and Tochiba Bluetooth Stack. The BlueSoleil appears to cost money to obtain, while the Tochiba (that's how they spell it, but it's actually Toshiba) software can be obtained at no cost.

http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/bluetooth/?page=download

I believe that's only for the "stack" and is not a driver for a USB bluetooth adapter.

Is there any generic win-98 driver for usb-based bluetooth adapters?

What about win-98 compatible bluetooth software?

Hi ...

Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings....

Those Toshiba drivers are not freeware, only work on toshiba products and expire after 60 days ....just went thru that.

There are bluetooth drivers out there for Win 9x, Broadcom, Dlink, Startech....etc. What you need to find out is what chipset is being used.

How can you find out the chipset?

Edit: It was simple enough in this case. ISSCEDRBTA for ISSC EDR Bluetooth Adapter. Now off to find suitable drivers. :)

I finally found a bluetooth stack with working "high quality audio" and possibly stereo(I don't have stereo speakers to test ).  Using Widcomm 5.0.1.2800 from here  http://download.cnet.com/Copy-28-of-BTW-5-0-1-2800-Compal-zip/3000-2110_4-143931.html

The fIle btaudio.inf was written specifically for Win98/ME.  Maybe this inf can be a model for other stacks to have working high quality audio like the 5.1 versions.  I'm using IOGEAR USB bluetooth model GBU221, Class 2  Device ID VID_0a5c&PID_2101 which is licensed with this stack.  Shows as Broadcom 2405 in device manager.

The cd that came with IOGEAR had stack 5.1.0.3300 which I couldn't get around the "device not found" error after installing.

One thing is Windows volume control  has no effect on volume level at high quality-only windows media player can change volume level.  And this zip file didn't extract all the way which makes me a little suspicious, but it still worked.

According to http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f237/widcomm-bluetooth-software-5-1-0-2800-keygen-363992/ on Jan-08-2007, the last version for Win9x was 5.1.0.2700.

Wayback has the .1700 and .2100 Anycom drivers.

http://www.wireless-driver.com/dell-wireless-355-bluetooth-module-windows-driver-software/ claims to have:

* Based on the Broadcom BCM92045MD bluetooth chipset;

Manufacturer Part# : GK103

Dell Part# : 430-2529

Device Name: Dell Wireless 355 Module with Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR Technology

Hardware IDs: USB\VID_413C&PID_8126

Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP Drivers, Utility,

The above mentioned dell 355 software didn't work with my IOGEAR adapter-I got the 'device not found' . The license and/or software is probably just for the dell 355 device id since they included a dfu file update.  I did find D00748-001-002.exe which is Widcomm 5.1.0.2800 and that is working better with my adapter.  I say better because it can connect 'hands free' and 'stereo' at the same time-and Windows volume contol works.  It's been my experience that only licensed versions of Widcomm have 'stereo' or 'high quality audio' usable so the "fun" is figuring out which device id's are considered licensed by the software.

Here's a link since there's seems to be some conflicting ver #s even in this package from Gateway

>D00748-001-002.exe which is Widcomm 5.1.0.2800

Did you mean 5.0.1.2800?

http://drivers-computer.blogspot.com/2009/02/gateway-e-295c.html

D00748-001-002.exe - Gateway WidComm Bluetooth Drivers Version: 5.0.1.2800

Supports: Windows XP

Note: This file contains the Windows XP Bluetooth network drivers for the computer models and components listed below.

7/12/2007 73,404 KB

Try the Anycom drivers which are newer.

Also, when installers don't work (for whatever reason), it is sometimes possible to extract and transplant individual files. You probably want to avoid Device Firmaware Upgrades (dfu files) from other manufacturers, however.

Another great discussion to read: How to Install Widcomm Drivers

No, I meant 5.1.0.2800.  Gateway version is a typo, when installing it says 5.1.0.2800

I couldn't find a download anywhere with the above link for anycom.

'How to install widcomm drivers' - That's an interesting approach-I hadn't seen that before, I might try some of the tips. to bad the links are dead.

Most of my dongles are internal Dell 350's.   I'm begining to wonder if they are capable of stereo.

A bluetooth cardbus seems pretty convenient. With Bluetooth, Windows 98SE/ME can:

  • Reliably (?) transfer/receive files from even iOS and Android devices (once Android lost the ability to be seen as USB, it was game over)
  • Serve as an outstanding wireless music player for bluetooth and vise-versa

Keep in mind that...

  • This is bluetooth 2.0- limited to 2.1 Mbits/  transfer speed (this is 0.2625 MB/s or 268.8 KB/s- painfully slow)
    • I would not recommend transferring large files due to the unreliability of Windows 9x
  • If streaming music, Windows 9x cannot play 360 KB/s files via bluetooth then
  • Windows 9x cannot support certain invalid characters- be sure all files transferred must use legal ASCII characters only
  • Possibly tether internet connection (would come in handy if all there is in the house is dial-up connection
  • Bluetooth devices like mouse and keyboards?
  • Video game controllers? Though, I'm not sure they would work on Windows 9x.

Potential Bluetooth:

  • Dell 1U746 01U746 (Dell Part Number 1U746 / 01U746 - Equivalent to Dell PN U5136 / 0U5136 ) - works with the Dell Latitude D500 and D600 and Dell Inspiron 500M and 600M laptop models

EDIT: More USB dongles!!

  • UD-300M (Bluetooth 3.0) - This is probably the only Bluetooth 3.0 I've found that claims compatibility with Windows 98
  • Blue Diamond Bluetooth Mini USB Adapter (Bluetooth 2.0)
  • IOGEAR GBU221 Bluetooth Adapter (Bluetooth 2.0)

  • 2 weeks later...

the Zoom 4312 PCMCIA used Widcomm software, looks like version 3.  The manual for this has very useful instructions for using all the bluetooth capabilities of Widcomm software.  https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/legacysupport.minim.com/documentation/bluetooth/BTUSB-PCC_Manual_Eng.pdf

best/easiest/cheapest? choice is   IOGEAR GBU221 Bluetooth Adapter or better yet IOGEAR GBU321 Bluetooth Adapter

-both are broadcom 2045 chips and will work with previous posted software D00748-001-002.exe
