Is there a generalized guide as to how to install 98se on a new system

Hello all...

First I want to thank all of you that have been experimenting with this to keep the availability of 98se around for those of us whom still may want to use it, but don't have the time or all of the knowledge to do so. My thanks to you all for taking on this task.

Secondly I have a small request... has there been some generalized guide as to how to install 98se on a new system (meaning a specific outline of general steps... with info on which files to patch and where to download valid patches)?

I have an HP m8300f (amd 6000 with 2 320gb hard drives and bought another 160gb drive for 98se). It has been sitting for about 1 year as I have been trying to find out how to install 98se and deal with the issues you all are addressing, like memory.... lol.

At the minimum, I want to make it a dual boot with 98se and xp pro on separate drives, possibly a tri-boot with linux too. Each OS on a separate drive. It currently has vista on it... but I want to wipe that off.

It is still a stock machine with the exception of the extra drive I have bought for it.... also plan to canabalize it later by upgrading mother board, case and such to make it into a decent machine.

I would like to get it working in the mean time.... and add myself to the list of machines with 98se and more than 1gb of memory....

A little info on myself.... I was BBSing back in the 80s as a teen.... so I can follow most of the details on here but would have to brush up as I go along to remember a lot of the more technical info. Ex.... I know what hexadecimal is... but don't expect me to be able to do memory tracing on the fly....LOL..

Thanks for your time and consideration....

LAter,

Tim aka guitar_samuri

Hi, Tim. Welcome to MSFN!

You'll notice I've split your post into a new topic. This is for it to get more visibility instead of being lost at the tail of a long thread. Now on to answring your main question: Well, sort of... I guess cannie's tutorials are just what you need! Find them here: How to install Windows 98 in modern motherboards using more than 1 GB and How to create easily a second Win98/XP in the same computer. Good luck!

Hey Dencorso...

Thanks for your reply.... no problem.... I hope my topic brings many more views here and maybe answers to those of us who've may have become too yupified to do it all on their own anymore....LOL.

It's kinda frustrating to have a new system sitting for a year because you just aren't sure where to begin on this. I will definitely be looking over those posts and planning.

Maybe this topic can be the area where the final steps are ordered and put so someone looking for the same information, like me, can come here and read what they need to do. It would save time from having to look through all the posts and come up with their own installation instructions.... possibly missing something important in the process. I had become fairly familiar with your name from reading a fair amount here before signing up and asking my question..... lol.

Thanks for you assistance.

( A shout out to all those in the Virginia area who remember the Megabashes and would remember me as Poltergeist in the WWIV BBS days.... not to forget GBBS, RBBS and a slew of others.... <grin>)

Hey Guitar_Samuri,

I'm afraid I can't help you but I have similar problems. There are a lot of knowledgeble people in this forum and I appreciate and applaude their efforts to help people like myself who do not know an OS inside out.

I had W98SE running on a modern MOB but with limited memory and on a 120 GB IDE HD. The trouble started when I decided to increase memory and to install W98SE on a SATA 500GB drive. I completely messed up my system although I had read lots of good advice in this forum.

My point is: In this forum you can find solutions for almost any problem you can think of but what I miss is a step by step manual how to install W98SE (preferably in dual boot with XP) on modern hardware.

I mean, starting with the partitioning, what is the best way to do it. Some say start with 1 small prim. partition, install W98SE, the drivers and the LBA patch and create the rest of the partitions. But the LBA patch and other patches are included in the unofficial upgrade. So the question arises which updates should I install and what is the sequence of installing the updates and the drivers.

Another thing is the RLoew patch for large amounts of memory, when you look at the list of W98 users with > 1GB memory then you will see that many are using the patch, others using Vcache or XRayers safemode etc. Now when do you need the one or the other, is there a relation with large RAM drives ?

So many questions for a dummy as myself but I am sure that all the answers can be found in the forum but alas it takes so much time !

Another suggestion for the moderators: Is it possible to have a wikipedia approach in ths forum for this type of manuals ? Where all members can make changes in the How-to manual(s) any time they experience improvements?

Then it would become a common effort, not taking too much time for one person

Hope to get reactions, regards, Imai

If you want a fairly easy way to install all the Win 98SE updates and some extras ... after a fresh install of Windows 98SE then go to the Windows 9x Member Projects forum and get the "Maximus Decim Cumulative Update v3.05 for Windows 98SE" ... all the updates are there, plus a guide as to what to install and the order of install after you install the Windows 98SE OS fresh. It is currently on Page 3 of that forum, near the top. The other downloads that are in the guide that you will need are also there.

This is Maximus Decim's install guide. Myself and many others use this guide and these downloads but you can decide for yourself if this will work for you. Sure can make things easy. The downloads are updated every so often.

15.Reinstall DirectX 9.0c.

And still!!! Basically, Windows 98SE supports work with

operative memory in the size up to 2Gb, but not all so is simple.

Therefore, if Windows 98SE that is installed on a computer

with operative memory greater than 512 Mb:

1.In BIOS sets the size of aperture AGP in minimal

Value (64 mbytes are usual) for economy of addresses.

2. Sets the maximal cache size from 512Mb up to 64Mb -

to whom as it is pleasant - too for economy of addresses.

For this purpose it is used MaxFileCache=xxx (where xxx -

the cache size in KILOBYTES) in section [vcache] a file System.ini

If all works and is left, if glitches proceed:

3.If memory has more 1Gb, we add MaxPhysPage=40000 if from 1Gb

up to 768Mb - MaxPhysPage=30000 in section [386enh] a file System.ini

Another thing is the RLoew patch for large amounts of memory, when you look at the list of W98 users with > 1GB memory then you will see that many are using the patch, others using Vcache or XRayers safemode etc. Now when do you need the one or the other, is there a relation with large RAM drives ?

If you want to be able to use the RAM above 1GB in your system, you will need my Patch. The alternatives make Windows 9X think there is only 1GB so it doesn't crash.

Conventional RAM Disks consume critical resources so you are limited to a few hundred Megabytes or less.

I have written a set of RAM Disks that do not have this limitation. In addition, one of them can use the otherwise inaccessible RAM in Machines with 4GB or more of RAM.

Secondly I have a small request... has there been some generalized guide as to how to install 98se on a new system (meaning a specific outline of general steps... with info on which files to patch and where to download valid patches)?

When installing Windows 9X, three of my Patches need to be installed before Windows goes into Protected mode. This occurs after the first reboot during installation.

The Patches are as follows:

1. RAM Limitation Patch

2. High Capacity Disk Patch

3. SATA Patch

All of my Software can be found at:

To Duffy and RLoew,

Great info, now at least I know how to start things up!! :thumbup And I can make some clear decisions.

In my particular case I want a dual boot with W98SE and WXP. The W98 box will be used for an old AV Fast Master capture card that can not run under XP and in the XP box I will do the video editing.

So I need lots of RAM for editing (the more the better) but I don't need it for capturing.

If I understood you correctly then I can limit the use of RAM in the W98SE box by settings in the system.ini file and run W98SE without problems.

Somewhere else in this forum Vick1111 had W98SE on a SATA disk and with 2 GB RAM without Rloew's patches and I have the same MOB so for a start I will try his settings an see how it goes. If not I will let you know (over a week or so)

Thanks again for the info am I grateful :D

Another suggestion for the moderators: Is it possible to have a wikipedia approach in this forum for this type of manuals ? Where all members can make changes in the How-to manual(s) any time they experience improvements?

I don't think so. Not here. What you want is a wiki, not a forum, and they are quite different things. I do think that's a nice idea. But you'd have to start the wiki, and administrate it. Of course, you can open a thread here to announce it existence, interest people in it and keep us all informed about its progress. But your last remark is not entirely true: it would require a lot of effort on the part of the wiki creator/administrator, at least in the initial phase, until it can keep going on of its own momentum. And, unless you can interst a lot of people in it quite fast, that initial phase may last longer than you might expect. And, then, there is this question to be answered: are we a big enough community to keep a wiki going on? Good luck!

As for the here and now, there are cannie's tutorials. Find them here: How to install Windows 98 in modern motherboards using more than 1 GB and How to create easily a second Win98/XP in the same computer. The latter is precisely intended for people looking to do what you said you want to do. So, you shouldn't feel left alone and in the dark. Vick1111's machine is described in post #2 of the > 1 GiB list, for which there is a link in my signature. All the machine's configurations there are listed with the explicit purpose of providing good examples of configurations known to work, so that's indeed a good starting point, and I'm confident you'll have success with your own machine faster than you think. Your latest post makes me think you've already taken the right key decisions.

One last thing: One can add the .NET framework (both 1.x and 2.0) at any point. So, unless you do have some important software that requires them, don't add them from the start, just for the sake of adding them. They are big and complex, and will just sit there occupying disk space. And to remove them is quite labor intensive, although it's possible. Furthermore, in a double-boot machine having XP as the other boot, you already have them in XP, so you don't really need them also in 9x/ME. Of course, this is my opinion and others will disagree.
