Automatic Update Problem

I have downloaded an automatic update from windows xp at least 4 times. After I shutdown the computer and return to windows the same update message appears. It seems that whatever the update was trying to change, it was not being recognized. Here is the update language:

Update For Windows (KB967715)

INSTALL THIS UPDATE TO RESOLVE AN ISSUE IN WHICH AUTORUN FEATURES WERE NOT CORRECTLY DISABLED.

I would appreciate any help with resolving this problem. Thanks

Memnoch: Thanks. I believe it did install manually; however, I still am getting the same yellow shield with the exclamation (!). It continues with the same message as if it was not installed. Are there any other solutions??

You can check if it really did install properly by looking at KB967715.log in your WINDOWS folder.

Did you reboot?

And have you visited Windows Update and rescanned since this update was installed manually?

If you are using the icon in the bottom left to install the update. You are not installing the update manually. Go to Microsoft's web site and download the patch. Then run the executable to install it.

I'm having the same problem as Westley. I had previously checked WindowsUpdate.log which indicated that the update was successful. However following James_A's suggestion, I looked at KB967715.log and find there lines about half-way through the log that read:

5.578: KB967715 installation did not complete.

5.578: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf201

(I tried to attach the log in case the complete file can help to resolve the problem, but get the message "Upload failed. You are not permitted to upload this type of file". I'm very new on this forum, so have lots to learn. So far, I don't understand why uploading a text file is a problem.)

Near the top of the file I see these lines:

The first person who responded gave me the link to download and install manually. I did do this; however, I still get the yellow guard (!) telling me to download the update which is the same update.

I think you have mixed up two updates with very similar numbers: your first post referred to "Update For Windows (KB967715)" but you have posted the log from KB960715.

KB960715 does not install any files, it only modifies the Registry. Most of the log you have posted just shows that you installed other updates at the same time. Maybe you would like to post the other log, but first maybe you should try installing the update manually.

It is possible to delete/reset the local database and folders used by Automatic Updates, but first you should try installing the update manually.

If you want to install this update manually, please follow the instructions already given above by nmX.Memnoch and AO3. Download the file WindowsXP-KB967715-x86-ENU.exe from the link given by nmX.Memnoch and double-click it to install it. As AO3 says, ignore the Automatic Updates shield and just double-click the downloaded file. Shut down everything else that is running on your computer, as you will need to reboot to complete the install.

I also had followed the steps for the manual installation. That didn't seem to resolve the problem. I believe the update log file I mentioined that included the lines:

5.578: KB967715 installation did not complete.

5.578: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf201

was not from the manual update, but from a subsequent automatic update.

Also, I have never been prompted to reboot after the installation completed, which I interpret to be another indication that the install was not successful. Despite this, when I go to "Review your update history" in the Microsoft Update web site, I see that I have performed this update seven times, and each time it is reported that the update was successful.

Here's a tidbit that I have just noticed, in case it's relevant: After performing the update, the MS Update web site reports that there are no further updates required. It is not until after I reboot that this update is reported again as being required.

I guess I've had the same problem with attaching the log file as Westley, but I have just re-run the update (manually, following instructions by nmX.Memnoch). The resulting log file is not too long, so I will post it at the end of this message. This log file does not contain the lines shown above, however (after rebooting) I still get the prompt to install the update.
