Just follow these simple steps to intergrate the Product Key and OEM cert:

1: Create a new text file and copy paste the text below inside and save the file as PID.TXT

Value='Enter Product Key Here'

do not enter the brackets i,e use Value=xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

This can be Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate OEM key.

2: Now make Folders $OEM$\$$\SYSTEM32\OEM

3: Take your OEM XRM-MS file that matches your key and copy the file to OEM folder

4: Use UltraIso or PowerIso to make iso of your Vista or Vista SP1 DVD, (VLite, anyone?)

DO NOT USE ROYALTY OEM DVD, i,e Asus Dell e.c.t as this involves editing .WIM files

5: Open ISO with UltraIso or PowerISO

6: Now add PID.TXT file and $OEM$ folder you created earlier to Vista SOURCES Folder

7: Save ISO and burn it then install

Your Vista will now install and activate

Burn the contents as a bootable DVD and you have your OEM disk!

My case is that my family has bought an HP (COMPAQ??) desktop with Vista Basic already installed, and came with a lot of junkware preinstalled on the machine. In the event that I would want to reinstall Vista on the machine, I would have to use the COA sticker on the machine, and the Windows Anytime Upgrade CD, which is obviously not an OEM disc, certainly not a manufacturer-dependent preactivated one.

This guide that I have found doesn't seem too clear... All I want to do is be able to make an OEM CD that will activate automatically, and avoid the hassle of calling Microsoft. I am willing to be patient and learn, so post away...Thanks in advance!

There is a lot of material here on MSFN on how to do the exact same thing that I want to perform, with windows XP.

Someone should know.

I do not know what the Vista Anytime Upgrade cd is.

Also, we are more busy during the week than on the weekend.

just follow the steps. It describes what you have to do. What's unclear for you?

I think what the OP is saying is that he wants to make sure it will work before trying to do it, because obviously the HDD isn't crashed yet. I recommend trying out these steps and test it in a VM session to see if it unlocks for you.
