DigeratiPrime Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 Hey everyone, I've updated the software list with almost every suggestion, removed dead links, added many new applications. The old topic remains linked to at the bottom of the above post, as well as an attached Excel file I am using to manage the above post. I intend to add descriptions to each line soon. Of course suggestions on software and categorization are welcome!
puntoMX Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I would like to add in Graphics (other): trueSpace7.6Microsoft bought it back in 2008 an it's for free now, comes with manual in PDF and some nice videos. lots of textures and objects to download and most are for free too.Have fun with this one .
Redhatcc Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Malwarebytesi know its hard to get them all... but Malwarebytes is a life saverWPI^^ the god send!
alrichdesa Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 That Pretty Much Covers Up Everything! It's Hard To Find A Free Tool That You DiDn't Mention.....How 'Bout Daemon Tools Lite- Pretty Good App (Are There Any Reasons You Left It Out? Security Perhaps?)
Nick_White Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 At least for me, Virtual CloneDrive is much better:- smaller install- no adware in the installer- doesn't require a restart to function- up to 8 virtual drivesOne downside is that it doesn't support .NRG and other proprietary formats.Another freeware virtual drive manager that I like is MagicDisc. It has the same advantages as the one above, plus the interface is like Daemon Tools. It supports .NRG and others.
puntoMX Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I found a nice stand alone Multimedia/HTPC player called GeeXboX.

DigeratiPrime Posted March 1, 2009 Author Posted March 1, 2009 I don't think we should include Linux only software, including Live CDs, like GeeXboX because by its nature almost all of the software in that domain is free and would detract the meaning of this list IMO. Similar I am leaving out Daemon Tools because it is adware and similar non adware software is available. Otherwise I've added all of the suggestions so far and the following:MSFN Member ProjectsCmenunLiteUniExtractvLiteAntiMalwareFreeFixerAudio PlayersAIMPAudio ToolsMusicyBurning SoftwareDVDScribeEmail ClientsThunderbirdEncryptionLastPassNetwork Tools (other)MobaSSHTftpd32Office AppsLyXScribusSpeedCrunchWinkProgrammingCodeLiteSystem ToolsAutoHotkeyCookie MonsterDMGExtractorHFSExplorerKiwiUSB CopText EditorsJDarkRoomWeb BrowsersQtWeb
Stoner81 Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Goldwave should be added under Autdio Tools.Homepage:-www.goldwave.comIt can be used for free but its mega cheap to buy and its an awesome bit of kit.
million450 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 FlexiMusic Wave Editor is another goodie that has been missed in this awesome list, include this too
uid0 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 thegreenbow.com vpn client doesn't look free, and the kiwi and memtest links are crossed over.In "Disc mounting" you could add Imdisk http://www.ltr-data.se/opencode.html#ImDiskThanks for the list.
DigeratiPrime Posted March 27, 2009 Author Posted March 27, 2009 Thank you uid0 the Kiwi and Memtest86+ links are fixed and the GreenBow VPN Client was removed.New Additions...MSFN Member ProjectsVista Codec PackageVizeXPizeAudio PlayersMediaMonkeySoundbaseAudio ToolsMilkyTrackerMODPlug TrackerAntiMalwarea-squared FreeGMERSUPERAntiSpywareBurning SoftwareISO RecorderDisc MountingImDiskMagicDiscWinCDEmuDrive ImagingGImageXParagon Drive Backup ExpresseBookComicRackxCHM Network ScannerinSSIDerOffice AppsAngel WriterPDF SoftwarePdf Split and MergePDF-Xchange ViewerPerfect PDF ReaderRSSFeedReaderSystem ToolsAnolisCloneSpyDependency WalkerHashCheck Web BrowsersApple SafariAvant BrowserVideo ToolsDebut Video Capture SoftwareFRAPSGraphStudioTSReader
meowing Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I don't think we should include Linux only software, including Live CDs, like GeeXboX because by its nature almost all of the software in that domain is free and would detract the meaning of this list IMO.I'm not so sure about that. I was very pleased to use disks like http://www.sysresccd.org/ to change partition size.Or to use the http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ for several hardware checking and all that jazz..
DigeratiPrime Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 I admit I used gparted not too long ago and was really impressed by how well it works these days. Problem is a Live CD category is easy to add, but technically we could add almost any number of applications that would run on them; furthermore many installer discs are 'live' now too. I foresee it spawning a new topic, which would probably belong in the other subforum. And the topics would need names to avoid confusion: 'Free Software for Windows List', and 'Free Software for Linux List'.On a different note what I would really like to see is Guides made by members that show how/why they use certain software, what it can do, and why they like it; this might be a sticky topic or a new subforum. What do you guys and gals think?
