Hi guys,

Here is a pic of the PCB. I have done a search for the model PCB on the IC but i cannot find anything. Again its a genuine nokia CA-42 cable.

Ahh it has 5 wires in total -> Yellow, white, blue, red and black

Ahh the main black chip on the IC is an AMTEL variant of some sorts. I should have brough it in to work with me today...kinda forgot:)

Hi, I purchased a ca-42 cable from ebay - it came with drivers but I cannot seem to access it. No sign of it in Device Manager when I plug it into the USB - do I have to connect a Nokia phone to it in order for it to be recognised?
If you haven't a new COM or USB device you can have a problem.

Check your USB ports, refresh device manager, etc

There are fake cables and you can have one.

You connect a Nokia phone, but it will use D+ and D- lines, not RX and TX.

An update:

A PM brought to mind the idea of - is my RS232 to TTL getting enough power at 3 volts? Well, it's the SchmartBoard module "Populated RS-232 SchmartModule" which says it wants 5 volts to run, but seems to be communicating fine with the HDD at 3 volts. Okay, but I should try 5 volts, right? Tried that too, and got the same "Unknown Diag Cmd Failure 12CC4" when I tried the "N1" command.

Yes, 3V is more than enough. If you change to 5V you will see no difference.

Your problem is different, it seems like something else. It might be related to mechanical part or some important data (on service area) was lost.

Tested the pinouts of the cable - I'm not receiving any kind of voltage, so I guess that rules out it being a straight USB cable. I cannot, of course, test RX/TX because of the driver problem... but it may just be that the cable is fake cr*p. Beau Locks!

I have just updated my two drives to new SD1A firmware from old SD1A as Gradius2 suggested. Everything went ok no error messages no problems. :thumbup

I then decided to check both drives in HDTune.

Both drives work & benchmark ok but one of them (I believe the one I performed BSY fix but not 100% sure) is not sending info (SMART) to HDTune. Check attached pics and tell me if there is a way to fix this. If not, no problem, as long as I have my data back and my drive works I couldn't be happier.

Hey guys!

Ive managed to get hold of a multimeter and I have managed to find 3 wires that give readings. One is 2.3v and the other is 1.6. The third is the GND as its the only wire that gets a response from the other two.

Any suggestions?

Yeh, that's what I'm afraid of. Anyone know any more about this?

Thanks,

Chris

I used old S65 USB Cable with PL2303 chip and unbricked my ST3500320AS. Look at your cable if have PL2303 will work.

Hi mastertab,

thanks for your answer. My old S65 cable is a DC-540 and hasn't the PL2303 Chip.

Yesterday i've bought i converter and i hope it will work. Seagate won't help me with my problem.

Thank you so much !!! I've fixed my ST31000340AS today using Gradius2's BSY direct guide

(skipped the G-List part).... and it works perfect !!!

I would like to recommend anyone to use the Nokia CA-42 cable that looks like ...

http://buffalo.nas-central.org/index.php/U...RM9_Linkstation

Got mine in Thailand today with the exact same look. So, I guess it is all around.

... if the driver is installed correctly, there will be no need to use any additional power

source for this cable..... I cut out the cellphone side's head ... found only 3 wires ... and

connecting them to single jumper each (normally found in the computer case's audio or LED

connection) by twisting and tape around,.. then to the HDD pin. No seed for soldering at all.

But of course, you still need the power for SATA.
