Nvidia graphics drivers

I find that I cannot successfully load the drivers from NV8269.exe under Windows98SE.

My monitor is a Dell 1504FP running in analogue mode. I would like the resolution to be 1024x768 and display 256 colours. At present I can only get 640x480 and 16 colours.

I have an AMD642x processor on an ASUS M2N-CM DVI motherboard which has Nvidia Geforce 7025 / nForce 630a (MCP68s) chipset and integrated Nvidia Geforce 7 Series Shader model 3.0 DirectX9 graphics processor.

Trying to load the unzipped NV8269.exe after selecting Geforce 7025 / nForce 630a I can get to a stage where Windows copies the files and says that it has finished loadingthe drivers and in “Properties” “Settings” I can move the resolution pointer 1024x768 and select 256 colours.

I then hit “apply” and reboot. This results in “Windows protection error” message and it will then only start in Safe mode and the display is back to 640x480 resolution + 16 colours and not adjustable.

“Settings” “Control Panel” “System” “Display” says that the drivers are not installed properly.

Is the problem that the graphics is integrated in the motherboard chipset and not on a PCI card or am I missing out some step in the installation procedure?

Help would be much appreciated.

The last official Nvidia Windows 98/ME drivers version is 81.98.

82.69 does need Windows 2000 or newer.

Thanks sfor, but 81.98_forceware_win_9x_english.exe when opened says that I have no Nvidia graphics and puts its legs in the air.

The forceware 81.98 does not support the newer Nvidia devices. But, there was a thread about an unofficial Nvidia driver packages, some time ago.

The last official Nvidia Windows 98/ME drivers version is 81.98.

82.69 does need Windows 2000 or newer.

Nvidia 82.69 does not work with Windows 2000/XP/Vista/etc [nor any other NT based OS], it is only for Windows 98, 98 SP1, 98 SE + ME, and it is the last driver [beta] ever released by Nvidia for these operating systems.

NV 82.69 is also the only driver which has LCD monitors wide screen resolutions implemented.

About your problems with the GeForce 7025 laptop:

I don't think this particular chipset is included in the INF chipsets list, so that's probably why your laptop locks up.

Also, this driver may not work properly with mobo integrated NV chipsets. [?]

If I can find the Dev ID for your chipset, I'll add it to the list [.INF].

I am using NVidia v77.72, which does not have a shutdown problem under Win98, together with a bfg Geforce 7800 GS OC video card (AGP, 256MB), a 20" ViewSonic VP2030b LCD monitor (max.resolution: 1600x1200), an E4500 dual core and 2GB of RAM.

Unfortunately, the widescreen resolution 1440x900 is not on the nVidia Screen Resolution menu of v77.72, confirming your statement. Most new LCD monitors, however, have the widescreen resolutions 1920x1200, 1680x1050 or 1440x900. I cannot use nVidia v82.69 because its shutdown problem erratically blacks out, on the Viewsonic under DVI, POST-info and the System Commander boot menu for the selection of operating systems.

Is there a fix for the v77.72 driver to support under Win98 newer widescreen resolutions? If not, this would be a major limitation on the usability of Win98 with modern hardware, like widescreen LCD monitors. The 16:10 widescreen resolution 1280x800 is actually displayed among the currently possible resolutions of v77.72.

On another older desktop with the same ViewSonic VP2030b LCD monitor and the same bfg Geforce 7800 GS OC video card, but with Nvidia v82.16 (not v82.69) the widescreen resolution 1440x900 is not displayed on the Screen resolution menu, and cannot be set to 1440x900 via Add Custom resolution. Is this due to the Nvidia driver or due to the ViewSonic monitor? I.e. if I upgrade from Nvidia v82.16 to v82.69, will 1440x900 appear in the Screen resolutions menu for the Viewsonic? BTW this desktop has shutdown problems because of v82.16.

I am about to buy a monitor for building a 2nd Win98-compatible desktop with modern hardware, and would like to get a widescreen LCD monitor for it, so your ideas are highly appreciated. The importance of this matter would even warrant a new topic, like "Running Win9x/ME with a widescreen LCD monitor"

BTW, your ReadMe also lists 1600x1200 as widescreen, is that a typo or really widescreen?

I am right now running the v77.72 driver and have available widescreen 1680x1050, 1440x900 and 1280x800.

You just need to add the desired resolution(s) to NVAGP.INF and reinstall. Or alternately, add them also to the registry and no need for reinstall, just reboot.

The added lines for NVAGP.INF for 1440x900 and 1680x1050 are:

For my FX 5200 these entries are in the [NV30Modes.AddReg] section. You'll need to check for the correct section for your card. You can add other refresh rates per your monitor specs. Also note that I only added modes for 8 bit and 32 bit color. If you plan on ever using 16 bit then you'd need to modify the 16 bit list as well.

In the registry, you can add the resolutions and refresh rates under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Display\0000\MODES\32

(and \8 or \16). Look at the existing keys and use the same format for the new keys.

I'm afraid all NV drivers older than 82.69 do not support widescreen monitor resolutions.

I don't have the code to mod the older drivers, and a simple manufacturer device or resolutions list INF add-in doesn't seem to work in my case [GeForce 9800 GTX+ PCIx and HannSpree 28" widescreen LCD].

Also, a mix-and-match of files from different driver versions is a no-no! Your computer(s) will lock up!

You could try to mix-and-match files of different versions, but I wouldn't recommend it, unless you have the patience to reboot to native DOS and restore a working driver numerous times.

I must have got lucky with the FX5200 then. Weird that later cards might not accept the INF mod. At any rate I am running dual widescreen monitors LG227wtg and NEC 20WMGX2, and the NEC is on DVI. No problems except Windows 98 stubborn insistence on rounding resolutions down to a multiple of 8 when using Dualview.

Dear MDGx,

 

I am using Windows 98SE, but my new Video Card (AGP Point Of View Geforce 7300GT 512RAM) does not work with NV8269.exe drivers

 

Setup says something like this "No Nvidia Chip Found". I tried manual install via "Have disk" forwarding  to extracted drivers folder (TEMP\NVAML.inf), then installs fine - but when system restarts - it hangs. I have to go to safe mode, remove driver - then it starts up. I do not know what to do . In other threads (about NV82.69 driver) it is said that it works with GF7300GT..

 

CPU Intel P4 2400Mhz, Intel D845GBV motherboard. 1GB RAM.

 

EDIT: I Also tried to intall drivers, from the Member Soporific Driver Packs. No Luck, also driver installs, but windows refuses to start up. Something I noticed, that  NVAGP.inf -manual installation via "Have Disk" refuses to install (no mached drivers found) only NVAML.inf is detecting 7300GT, installs it, but during reboot - windows does not startup normally.
