Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Troubles

Recommended Posts

I have a 7200.11 that I purchased in October. I have had it running for many hours daily since mid October. It is still working but is it going to be affected by this problem? These are the details of my drive:

Barracuda 7200.11

ST3640323AS

S/N: 5VK05SJF

P/N: 9FZ134-568

Firmware: SD35

Data Code: 09077: August 22, 2008

Purchased from Newegg in California

Based on your firmware version and serial number I would say you're on the safe side. If it's not making strange clicking noises and diagnostic tools don't come up with bad sectors, etc. it will run along fine. I hope :P

They pulled the webpage I quoted in my chat log pretty quickly, luckily I still have the page open in my browser. Here is the text:

Welcome, Seagate hard drive owners. A number of Seagate hard drives from the following families may fail when the host system is powered on:

Barracuda 7200.11

DiamondMax 22

FreeAgent Desk

OneTouch 4

Barracuda ES.2 SATA

Pipeline HD

Pipeline HD Pro

SV35

Once a drive has failed, the data is inaccessible to users. Seagate has isolated this issue to a firmware bug affecting drives from these families manufactured through December 2008. Please use the following tools and instructions to determine if you have one of the affected products. If you do, we recommend that you update the firmware on the disk drive.

To help determine if you need to pursue this any further, you will need to check your model number, serial number and firmware revision. This can be done in Windows – it's easy! Download and run, or simply run as is, the Seagate Drive Detect software program. You will see a screen like this. Look for the drives that are Attached:

Image

In this example above the model number name is ST31500341AS, the serial number 9VS00J20 and firmware revision SD1A.

Click here to download Drive Detect: Download Flash

Or you can use Microsoft Windows Device Manager to see the model numbers of you disk drive. At the Windows Start button select Run and type: devmgmt.msc

Then expand the Disk Drive branch to see the model numbers. Like this:

Or you can download SeaTools for Windows which displays all of the needed information.

See if your model number is in this list.

If you have one of the models listed above, Customers can expedite assistance by contacting Seagate via email. Please include the following disk drive information: model number, serial number and current firmware revision. We will respond, promptly, to your email request with appropriate instructions.

Or you can call Seagate Support at 1-800-SEAGATE. Please be prepared to give the serial number of your drive as the solution depends on knowing the exact serial number.

Awesome, nice job! So, at least we know the list of models affected (I am guessing any of those with SD15 firmware?) and that they are going to have a firmware update to resolve the issues...the question is WHEN!

The page you snapped from their site, does it mean that their going to get out a update/fix to all our failed drives or must the drive be unlocked from bsy mode until we can use it when its released.

And on the recovery of the password how is it going?

And have somebody maked any progress on the LBA=0 fix yet?

I think we are great team that doing everything to get our data back and bust up seagate that son of a bi**hes

If your drive has bricked you won't be able to use the firmware update. So data recovery will still be our problem.. And if it's reset, by using a recovery kit or other means, I guess you can update it.

I found a plugin that takes images of the pages.

Here is the page that Seagate does not want you to see:

http://www.2shared.com/file/4655425/b395b9...ledge_Base.html

The file in a smaller size for easier viewing in case anyone is bandwidth limited.

My model is listed on that page. Does that mean my hard drive is going to be affected despite my different firmware and S/N?

Barracuda 7200.11

ST3640323AS

S/N: 5VK05SJF

P/N: 9FZ134-568

Firmware: SD35

Mine was produced in China. That a bad thing?

That could well be the case. Ultimately seagate corp itself is the expert on this problem. But first we have to wait until seagate puts up the definitive page. If your drive then matches the description, you will be requiring an update.
