Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Troubles

Recommended Posts

To all seagate barracuda 7200.11 SD15 (and other version) owners, either broken down (by "no detect in bios", 0GB reported disc size & "the click of death") or still functioning fine, who are reading this topic:

After multiple complaints that the 7200.11 fail & fine dataset was clogging up this main thread, I've decided to open a new topic on msfn dedicated to collecting the life history data of your seagate barracuda 7200.11 SD15 (and other firmware versions) drives.

Please register to the msfn forum and add your data to the list at the following topic (also located at msfn hardware hangout):

Hi. Since my HDD failed on January 09, 2009, I've been looking for solutions. After much searching I found the 7200.11 falling down thread on the Seagate forum, which prompted me to google more, through which I found this thread. I'll post my drive info in the other thread next time I shut down (booted from a 10? year old, 20GB Maxtor right now, lol. Still running just fine. :/). For now, I'll share that I know my serial starts with 9Q, that the firmware is SD15, and that it's the ST3500320AS model.

Just like the rest of you, I booted one day only to see that the BIOS couldn't find my HDD, on which I was running 5 different Linux installs, and which contained much data of varying importance. Fortunately, I learned a long time ago to make many back ups of data that I absolutely can't live without, so I didn't lose anything vital. That said, I'd be willing to volunteer my drive as a guinea pig for those working on solutions. After reading the whole thread (452 posts, whew) I'm about to start calling the local computer/electronics shops to see if they have any Serial->TTL cards. If none do, I'll grab one on ebay. My technical knowledge isn't that of a hardware engineer, but I built the computer this drive went into and I'm not afraid of using a command line terminal, so just tell me what to do.

Also, if anyone's still pondering whether it may be a virus, I can say with the utmost certainty that it's not. Combining the reports of Mac users and my fellow Linux users having this problem with my having not logged into Windows since I built this computer and installed the drive on Dec 02, there's no way a virus got to it. From my gathering, it's most definitely a problem with the firmware, which, from the data people have volunteered, appears to be the only major commonality (and if you've read the whole thread, you'll note that it's theorized that even the other listed versions are only minor revisions or just renamings of SD15).

I encourage those who bought their drives from online retailers to give detailed, negative reviews for it on the respective web pages, and for everyone to inform their acquaintances that this line of drives is defective, so that others might be warned about the problem and not have to go through the same trouble.

Lastly, thank you very much to Pichi and Fatlip, your efforts in seeking solutions to the problems we all have are greatly appreciated. And again, I'll gladly volunteer my HDD as a guinea pig for testing.

I too got burned by this 7200.11 epic fail. I shut my desktop down on Christmas Day, only to find out the next morning it had gone. The hard drive spins up like normal, but the HDD LED is just permanently lit, and it just locks up there on the motherboard splash screen. There are no strange smells coming from the hard drive, and to me it's almost certainly the firmware virus that seems to have infected so many of these hard drives. I tried connecting it externally through USB and there is no drive detected.

I'm not going to RMA it, if it means getting a refurbished hard drive with the same firmware which will probably crash out in another couple of months. I paid for a brand new hard drive, preferably a working one, so this is just outrageous to me. Instead I'm going to wait this out, hopefully there will be some kind of fix sooner or later. In the meantime I'm going to have to buy a replacement hard drive, which is obviously not going to be a Seagate. This is the last Seagate I'm owning. If this issue is so widespread they are going to lose so many customers over this. I've completely lost all respect for them.

My problem with Seagate is not that they had a bad batch, as it can happen. The problem is how they are dealing with it, or rather not dealing with it. Just ignoring it despite the problem being obviously there is like a slap in the face to the customers. So I'm going to return the favour and buy a replacement hard drive from a rival manufacturer instead so I can get out of this hell hole they have created. It's not ideal having to pay even more money to get the hard drive I wanted in the first place, but if it means getting one that works instead of having to put up with something which will brick itself every couple of months, it's worth it. I wouldn't be surprised if they deliberately coded the firmware to crash out like that. I suppose time will tell...

I guess that's my rant over. I must thank the people of these boards who are working on a way to fix this, and to keep all the information in one place. Hopefully justice will be done.

after breaking it open the case revealed a ST3500320AS with firmware SD81 made in China

I attached it to my mainboard and voila, the bios didn't recognize the hdd

plugged back into the case it worked again.

I plugged the hdd in another controller and it was detected normally. So it is neither locked nor does it have the busy problem.

But now I won't use it anyway knowing it could fail anytime.

What!!?!?!?!! SD81 at last!!!! You're the first here that have the same firmware that I have!!!

Sorry ToKuRo, now you are alone again with your SD81

You are referring to this guy:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/248044...tect-bios-fixed

He has spend big bucks on a software hardware complex, which was already known to fix the problem.

Yep nothing new here...

That's exactly what he has done. Here is the email response I got from him below. He sounds like a nice guy and he might be able to fix some peoples problem for a reasonable price so he can recoup some of his expenses (600$ CND) by the sound of it.

If anyone is interested in contacting him about it please PM me and I can pass along his email.

I’m contacting you as requested from Seagate forums.

I was able to restore my drive with a kit called “HDD Doctor for Seagate”. Unfortunately this kit is rather expensive and it was a bit of a leap-of-faith when I ordered. I was so desperate for my data and after enough researching I felt this would be the last resort. I bought it from a Chinese company called Salvation Data for 600 dollars. The process is a bit complicated and I relied on their support for a few days to get it working. They are of course 12 hour time difference away and they don’t speak English fluently but eventually I got it working. With the repair kit I was able to reset the firmware BUSY status of my HDD and the drive (and data) was restored 100%. I didn’t have a need for a spare drive as the original drive was working to my satisfaction. If you have multiple Seagate drives I would consider getting the kit but if it’s just a single drive I can offer to unlock if for you at a fraction of the repair kit price.

Let me know!

Andy

Is this guy also from Canada? If so, this could be very convenient for some forum members.

edit.. Nevermind.. I need some sleep. Toronto it is.

Ya by the sound of it he's in Toronto ON Canada about 4 hours from me (Ottawa ON). So for me it wouldn't be to expensive to mail him my drive potentially. I'm going to get some more information I will keep you all posted if there's anything interesting.

I think not enough people are bugging seagate with this drives problem. I got this reply from the customer service

"At this time we are not aware of any issues with these drives. If the drive has failed and you can either call or go on line to take care of the warranty on the drive."

That is their standard awnser. Call centre employees have most likely been trained to give that reply to all customers who called in with this problem. When seagate employees publically admit there is a problem they're legally f*****. So that's why. Also check out the official seagate forum for complaints of more people who called seagate support and got the same awnser as you did..

I think not enough people are bugging seagate with this drives problem. I got this reply from the customer service

"At this time we are not aware of any issues with these drives. If the drive has failed and you can either call or go on line to take care of the warranty on the drive."

Can anyone give a confirmation on the validity of these commands? Pichi perhaps?
