Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Troubles

Recommended Posts

Interesting post on the official Seagate forum some time ago by Vegetarian (from overclockers.co.uk):

I bought 2 of these drives (500gb) some months appart. First one in Dec 07 and second May 08, there was no problems with the 7200.11 on the net.

October I get reboot of death on the 2nd drive - PC is fine one moment then it reboots and the 7200.11 is not seen in bios. I did try transplanting the circult board from my good seagate but no good.

Replaced second drive failed 6 weeks later in same way. PC shop started to tell me theres nothing wrong with seagates and it must be something wrong with my PC. I also noticed that the 2nd drive caused static sound thru my Speakers. It was replaced and this drive had static too.

the new drive failed again on Chrismas day... Same old not recognised in BIOS.

Could this problem/weakness with the 7200.11's be caused by a windows update in october as there were no reports of this reboot of death till about this time?

And so the list steadily grows. Wish we had some contacts at the repair/RMA departments of various major webshops/electronics vendors to see if we could gather enough cases to make the problem statistically significant. But i guess we would need about 10000 drives before it would even get noticed..

hello to all,

first of all i would like to say that what is being done here is admirable. it just drives me crazy that seagate does not give us a hand and ignores our growing problem. :realmad: screw them. i add my drive on the list hopefully through our efforts we can figure something out.

fatlip,

we do have MX15, SD81 and HP24 in the list above..... so it may not be SD15 firmware related. Well, unless MX15, SD81 and HP24 all includes the 'defect'/'timer' existing in SD15.

Or... they are all basically SD15 with diffrent names or minor changes... I was just googling "SD81" and I found various SD81s all from thailand and in sizes ranging from 500GB to 1000GB. Funny thing is I also found Maxtor ones with SD81 too. (i.e.:http://cfusion.com/cgi-bin/getPart_1.cgi?strSearchFragment=sd81).

This is from a Guy that is asking for a PCB. Don't know if he was having the death on reboot issue...

Product of Thailand

It has identical part number as mine. The only difference (apart from the serial) is that mine is from date code 08464 (20/May/2008) and his is 08457 (16/May/2008)... and that makes me think as I observe the date codes of the other disks in the thread... why are there disks with firmware SD15 before AND AFTER sd81... generally a firmware replaces another older one or maybe I have a "test disk" whose firmware did not work good and they have to keep working with sd15???

...

the new drive failed again on Chrismas day... Same old not recognised in BIOS.

Could this problem/weakness with the 7200.11's be caused by a windows update in october as there were no reports of this reboot of death till about this time?

...

Here's a data point to suggest that the problem is not OS dependent.

My Seagate drive was on a Apple PowerMac G5 running Mac OS 10.5.6, 1TB drive purchased 26 July 2008, failed Dec 26 2008 (at least when I noticed it). Energy saver was set to [v] Put the hard disks(s) to sleep when possible.

Hmm, I'm starting to consider using Carbonite. US$50 a year for online backup and they don't care how much data you have. I might have to email them and make sure they're not using Seagate drives though... heh In fact, I DID ask the IT department where I work (40,000+ employees worldwide) what they use and I was informed that our data is entrusted to Western Digital drives. For the longest time I despised WD drives simply because of the confusing way the jumper worked on IDE drives. No jumper was for a single drive. Jumper in one place for Master with non-compliant slave, jumper in another for slave, or a third position for cable select. What I always hated about that was the fact that there was no jumper position for master with slave present, only master with non-compliant slave present. They seem to have fixed that within recent years though. So, considering the nature of the business where I work, and the sensitivity of that data, and the fact that WD is chosen to protect it, I will now have to revise my view of WD and invest in some of their storage.
