blichev
Just wondering what happens if I plug my drive in a EFI-based computer. Since there is no BIOS the HD detection should be different, no?As long as it has a BSY signal I don't believe EFI will be able to communicate with it.Anyway, i purchased a ST3500320AS Drive recently 9BX154-303:SD15:09142 and I'm following the threads about the problem. It's running fine so far and it's pretty fast. The difference is that it has the Site Code: SUZHSG (Made in China) and SerialNumber is 6QM06YHN (6QM instead of 9QM)Should I be worried? This is my 2nd 500GB Seagate Drive in the system, the other one is from the 7200.10 Series and I have my important info on both drives. mikesw
Here's weblink to speedfan to monitor HDD temps etc.http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
icefloe01
I'm willing to order the hardware/software from SalvationData... As I understand, it costs $500US and comes with directions etc. Will let you know how that goes...And then once you learn how to use it completely, you start a side business of data recovery and hard drive rejuvenation!! Depreciate it on business expense and your almost 100% profit from there on out!!
dskbrk
A poster there used the software "speedfan v4.37" to monitor smart, fan speeds and temperature. It might be usefulsoftware as monitoring software.Ironically, i read Speedfan values (and ran an in-depth online analisys too) just a few days before my 7200.11 died. Every value was ok.The angriest part in this story is that those drives may leave you randomly between one boot and another. With no early symptom. For those who still have a Seagate 7200.11 running I strongly suggest to place your data somewhere safe as soon as you can. Seriously, even if your drive is running fast and fine.
rainshower
I have the same problem. After running fine for some months, my HDD one morning suddenly was not detected by BIOS. Is dead since then. PrOdiGy1
Yep, there are absolutely no symptoms whatsoever for these fails, so i do not think that speedfan and monitoring temps etc is any use at all tbh. They work perfectly fine, then next time you try and boot, they are not detected.

poolcarpet
10 out of 13 drives listed here failed in Dec 2008. 1 failed in Nov and 2 in Jan. For those whose hard disk failed in Jan, when was the last time you powered up your PC? If it was december (maybe you went on Christmas holiday till after New Year??) then there might be a possibility the hard disk failed on the last shutdown in Dec.If that's the case, that makes 12 out of 13 drives failed in the same month! Anyway 10 out of 13 drives is also pretty high. Now, another possibility, any of you encountered thumb drive virus-es around the time your hard disk failed?? If this is virus related, it could explain the failures around the same time. Maybe the virus sent some weird sequence of commands to the hard disk??Man, I'm getting way tooooo paranoid! I am writing from Italy.I have a Maxtor drive with MX15 firmware, the same SD15 of Seagate. The problem is the same, my PC BIOS not recognized the drive.I have build a RS232 interface with Max232, but I have always the error: LED:000000CC FAddr:0024A051LED:000000CC FAddr:0024A051....LED:000000CC FAddr:0024A051I try to press CTRL+Z on HyperTerminal, but I don't have access to the HD Console. Nichev
I have rebooted my machine at least once in 2009. So that rules out some sort of y2k bug.I am probably on a wild goose chase here, but I am going to spend the night trying to resurrect this drive. I have found a utility that allows sending raw ATA commands to the hard drive. I have found that Ubuntu's liveCDwill not boot with the hard drive attached but Slax will.If anyone else is interested in mucking around the source code for the utility can be found at:http://users.tkk.fi/jwagner/electr/ata-query.cHere is a list of hex ATA commands:http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/..&.../100452348e.pdfLook under section 4.3 Edited January 9, 2009 by Nichev
