Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Troubles

Recommended Posts

You can see all commands of your 7200.11 disc with this:

Ctrl+z

F3 T>/C

F3 C>Q

(List all commands of your hdd)

I have made all steps for pass from BUSY state to READY state, but I think that I haven't the BSY problem.

Before it, I haven't BSY flags. You can test this flags with Victoria for windows 4.46f or MHDD boot iso.

Non destructive test that I have made:

Ctrl+z

F3 T>V

F3 T>V001

F3 T>V002

...

F3 T>V1FF

Some of these list are P List, GList, Primary DST, etc.

-----------------------------------------------------------

I use Tera Term too because it has log.

http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002416/ttermp23.zip

It is freeware, install and use:

COM1

Setup->Serial Port-> COM1 38400 8 N 1

File->Log->Unmark append and create a file

Log all received bytes.

To finish log pushbuttom "Close"

Hey all,

pichi is the guy that I have been talking with over the last few weeks. I would say he is now the main guy on this. He has successfully unlocked his drive from BUSY mode and is now doing most of the research on the commands.

Thanks,

G

My test from BSY to RDY:

------------------------

(Unscrew screws)

Ctrl+z

F3 T>/2

F3 2>Z

Spin Down Complete

Elapsed Time 0.158 msecs

F3 2>

(Hold power on and screw screws)

F3 2>U

Spin Up Complete

Elapsed Time 6.777 secs

F3 2>/1

F3 1>N1

F3 1>

(Power off)

If you was BSY you now are READY.

The next steps would be:

1.- SMART erase.

2.- Clear G list.

3.- Check traslator.

4.- User Partition Format repair.

5.- Translator regeneration.

6.- SetMax capacity (check NHPA and HPA).

See SMART List and G-List relation on:

(Show some problems)

With the list of commands and this webpage:

http://forum.hddguru.com/seagate-terminal-...ands-t6411.html

I can try a lot of commands, but I don't know the correct commands that I have to put.

Some commands can be trough SATA controller: ATA commands or SCSI commands.

SOFTWARE:

---------

For do all secure, download a PC emulator:

http://mobalivecd.mobatek.net/en/MobaLiveCD_v2.0.exe

It not need install, it is a standalone executable.

HELP! HELP!

Two or three months ago:

I remember that DiscWizard wrote in my unformattable hard disc the first time. Later, it appeared with 500 GB, one partition and formattable. Can anybody say the previous parameters of a "totally new HDD" without DiscWizard? I do not remember if it appeared with 0GB or not?

Is DiscWizard the traslator that writes SA?

Does DW format the HDD?, or only writes SA and MBR to create the partition?

(Seagate DiscWizard and Maxtor MaxBlast 5 are essentially same piece of software which is an OEM version of Acronis True Image 10 Home edition version 10.0.0.5077.)

Is there anybody that remember exactly these steps?

Pichi,

Thanks for this update. I think these questions you have below should be left on other forums as well. Are you cross posting to other forums?

In addition, I wonder if a firmware update from seagate could fix the 0 LBA problem since technically the drive is now visible in the BIOS. (not that I am holding my breath). Of coarse, we also want our data intact which is the reason we have all held on to our drives instead of of sending them for an easy RMA.

Speaking of which - is anyone keeping tabs on the seagate site or forum for new developments?

How many people here are from Malaysia or Singapore and affected by this exact problem? I'm trying to see if we can get enough people to consider 'sharing' the cost of the SD HD Doctor for Seagate.... USD500 for that, with 10 people it will work out to be about US50 per person or less. Cheaper than having each and everyone go buy/make the RS232 and trying trial and error.....

RS232 stuff is cheap (<USD10 for sure), trial and error and risk of data lost forever is priceless... if we can get 10 people, count me in... (I'm in KL btw)

Well so far i only three of us are in Malaysia,

Maybe we can get more people from lowyat.net forum. Maybe someone can open a topic with the same problem and sharing a link back here.

poolcarpet, if you can get 10 people then count me in too, where do you live? maybe we can all get together and fix our hdd :thumbup

Another suggestion is to go to Seagate Singapore. My collegue has a friend there who is working in there. He say can fix it but did not mention if its free or not. He also admits that there is a certain batch of HDD from Thailand is having this problems. He also says that "outside" people should not have the information regarding how to fix this problem themselves. I am maybe thinking of going there to get it done somewhere after CNY but i'll need to make a passport. I'm thinking of calling Seagate Singapore about this problem and see what they say.

Im from Malaysia too, in KL. I have just got my Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 (SD15) kaput yesterday. It was working fine the night before. But then it's gone undetected just like that the next morning when i powered on my PC. **** it! So what's the latest update on this now? I have just checked with one of the data recovery shops in town, the charge would be around RM700-800!

Well i send my HDD to http://www.datarecoverymalaysia.com/ last year december before Christmas.

And they say they will charge about RM900-RM1800. But after i pass my hdd to them for 1 week, they reply back to me that they still haven't been able to retrieve the data, and told me that its the firmware problem and they have been receiving this hdd problem since September. I even talk to their engineer incharge of this problem. So i told them i would like my hdd returned to me for the time being until they can finally retrieve the data. They says that they are also working with other data recovery company in Malaysia to solve this problem.

They also told me currently the only method is returning it to Seagate and using Laser Technology which will cost about USD 20,000 to USD 30,000. Well i can't remember if its in USD or RM but still its a huge amount of money!!

Only after that, i stumble upon Fatlip's discovery on the BSY state on this HDD.

To hoggiee,

Are you sure they charge only RM700-800 for recovering data from hdd with this problem?

What method are they using?

May I know what is the name of the company and how to contact them?

diagnostic port commands, same as the one Pitchi posted, but in slightly more readable .doc format.

http://files.hddguru.com/download/Datashee...0RS-232%20Port/

The level 5 and 6 descriptions came through in what looks like Russian and the level 5 commands were not actually in the documument. Okay, Ijust put it through babel.altavista.com and the translation says the level 5 commands are used only under "plant conditions". So these might the commands we need!! Here is the translation from babel (it threw in the word "of" a few extra times...):

Level 5. is used only under the plant conditions

Level 6 of command of batch of the files

Batch files for testing of starting- stoppages, switching of heads, CSS, tests 1,2, 3 corrections of burts, files to of test of start-stop, head of switch, CSS, 1,2, or 3 burst of correction of test, the assigned tests, the tests of the comparison of data, the possibility to introduce different of batch files in RAM.

Hope this helps in some way...
