Any network connection indicator for Win9x?

Windows 95, 98 + ME do have a connection tray icon built into the OS [%windir%\SYSTEM\lights.exe], but may or may not work with modern broadband connections.

And here's another one if using a dial-up analog modem, works also with CPU, swap file usage, etc...:

Best 3rd party [not by Microsoft] network/internet connection monitor/traffic tool in the business [free or otherwise], works with any type of connection:

NetMeter v1.1.3 32-bit for Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003/Vista/2008 monitors any TCP/IP, LAN, WAN Internet/network connection speed, highly customizable:

Hello MDGx,

thank you for your hint to %windir%\SYSTEM\lights.exe, but even delting "Lights.exe" in C:\windows\system didn't change anything. The "original" icon is still there and so I have 2 ntework connection indicators, the original one not serving for anything, because if I click on it, it only shows up for 1 second before disappearing and I am not able to correctly see the message, it might be able to give !

Do you have another idea. I would be greatful, because I didn't find any registry key in the internet provider's regkeys.

Hi MGDx,

Thanks for your infos, But the Lights.exe which lay in system directory is served for modem connection... Which is not what I want... (Heh, just want the little network indicator as in Win2K/XP have).

Tihit's IPtest make a great work on it... But just as other member said... seems there is something wrong with it's uninstallation issue... - - Otherwise, it works well...

Hey, I am not an expert, but as far as I understand, there is an order of priority between the registry entries. If you delete the last (lowest) one in achain, the other (two) superior entries are dead. So where is the problem ?

If I am wrong please tell me !

According to M$, the taskbar icon should disappear if you delete lights.exe in Windows 98/98 SE:

I don't know of another way to do this. :(

Tihiy's IPtest tool can be uninstalled/deleted only if you delete this registry key first (using regedit):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{35CEC8A3-2BE6-11D2-8773-92E220524153}

Then you need to restart Windows, so STOBJECT.DLL doesn't load anymore.

Only after that you can uninstall/delete IPtest.exe .

Nice and really very useful link MGDx, thanks ! I have cascaded my Control Panel.

Same for the explanation to uninstall. I will re-install for sure.

I WILL find out where the icon comes from !

nice program! I will use it on my 98 and Vista computer! (Like it better then vistas real one) I had to make my own notify icons for the task bar in vista (I styled my retro :-) ) The one on the left is the retro one and the one on the right is vistas

Hi,

the original icon (or better icons) are in Rnaapp.exe. I got rid of them by replacing them by blank icons. But the application is still there. When starting the browser all the other trayicons spring one place to the left. Any other idea ?

I do not dare to delete Rnaapp.exe.

Hopefully not a redundant suggestion -- is there anything in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices that might be responsible, if so maybe try disable it .. I would check.

I've got IpTest installed & running.

extract dll & exe into \windows\system and run install.reg.)

When I right-click on the tray icon, selecting 'Network Status' causes the error ...

'Function GetAdaptersInfo is not supported by the operating system'

Doing this again produces no response at all.

Any suggestions would be welcome.
