Opera 10

I think so. It runs on W95A, but I had to install 'Windows Installer 2.0' due to a lacking msi.dll. (Beats me where Opera needs it for). Further I had to download the 'Classic installer' version of Opera, which is a bit harder to find, because the default installer wanted me to install IE 3.1 first. (!). And of course Opera is complaining about a missing or too old Msimg32.dll, just like v9.5 did.

But it runs fine. So far the only problem I have seen is a font problem in the Transfers window. All numbers (download size, -speed) are just greek.

(Take that, Mozilla, OpenOffice.org and AbiWord!)

Oh please. The ACID3 test means close to nothing. Also, these tests are only partly an indicator of web standards support. A web browser can pass ACID2 and still have abysmal web standards support.

Opera has been my primary browser since 2001. The only reason I kept Firefox this long was due to Opera having difficulty organizing pictures properly on Ebay. Whether Acid 3 plays a factor or not, I am happy Opera remedied the problem.

Will Opera be able to use java uploader controls such as those on Myspace pages for uploading media? Last time I checked, Opera 9 would not work with Myspace's uploader and I was directed to a "Download Java" and IE page. Someone told me the reason being that the java engine in Opera is that of it's own design and can't work with an outside JRE? If anyone can confirm this to be true than this may be a problem and maybe Opera cannot change this behavior or it would be very difficult to do.

This isn't much of a big deal since I can use Firefox to upload media. Myspace's no-frills uploader tends to crap out/time out and isn't all that consistent at times. There are more sites that are starting to employ these java parts to pages and I'm hoping Opera can work out the issue.

When it's browser sniffing, maybe you can use the 'F12->Edit site preferences->Network->Browser identification->Mask as Internet Explorer' trick. After a refresh (F5) the site should 'think' you're using IE.

i was using opera 9.62 recently. it works fast, looks good.

only problem was with the webpage service.futuremark.com.

try to find some 3dmark results and you will see, but the page itself is a nightmare. also opera requires new installation of Java if you want to use javascripted pages... IE6 with Slimbrowser prevailed because its java support is older but better than new one. newer java seemed to me as big trouble - i had to remove it from system...

i guess i will try Opera 10 but i am skeptic since i had no trouble with slimbrowser.

however very slow comparing to Firefox and Google Chrome

Care to share some data?

Are there more recent tests?

http://nontroppo.org/timer/kestrel_tests/

Or are you talking of "pure" javascript speed?

http://ejohn.org/blog/javascript-performance-rundown/

http://w-shadow.com/blog/2008/09/03/google...-js-speed-test/

It seems like latest 10 Alpha is much faster in them too:

However, I guess that the small differences in tests cannot really be appreciated in "real life" use, and choosing one over the other should be made over a "personal feeling" rather than on benchmark data....;)

No , I mean in every things. Take the exemple of loading a Flash Component! To see the flash controls, you must click on the Animation! This is crapy. FIREFOX POWA, PLUS...I have some experience in Browser..Opera is 50% slow than IE and FIrefox..trust me. And to finish, see the title of your Download.com document ! Just the title :D xD

I really think Opera was the greatest browser available 'till the 5-th version and then suddenly it became heavy, unpopular and much more ugly than before... If you want something really fast, try K-Meleon, I think it's still available for Win98

EDIT: Yes, it is!

What are the system requirements?

While a Pentium level processor is recommended, K-Meleon can run on 486 systems that meet the minimum RAM requirements. Please consult the release notes for particular versions of K-Meleon.

Users of Windows 2000 may experience problems due to the absence of msvcp60.dll. Install the Windows 2000 Support Tools from your setup CD or consult the Windows Update website.

Users of Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0 may have to install Vcredist.exe to get the latest run-time components for Visual C++ applications.

Users of Windows 95 may also have to install shlwapi.dll (part of Internet Explorer).
