Can anybody tell me if these updates are obselete?

Here is some information from my notes (works for me, your mileage may vary):

2124261 = a Wildbill unofficial patch. Current, not obsolete.

914389 = replaced by 980232.

923414 = ?

936021 = ?

941644 = replaced by 951748 v2.

941693 = replaced by 979559.

943484 = replaced by 973037.

975560 = current, not obsolete.

Did you find out if these are obsolete.

And I found another one Windows2000-KB957579-x86-ENU

923414 - Srv.sys, replaced by 982214 (MSFN user Wildbill-produced unofficial update)

936021 - Msxml3.dll, replaced by 2079403 (MSFN user Wildbill-produced unofficial update)

957579 - replaced by 951748 v2

While they work for me so far with no problems, of course you install unofficial updates at your own risk.

Regarding 936021 and any other (official) update: to find out whether or not it has been superseded by an (official) update, you can check its security bulletin page. Each update has a column listing "bulletins replaced by this update". Check it:

Thanks! I do use all of Wildbill patches for 2000 Server and I have no problems either.

I have deleted all obsolete updates from my HF folder and replace them with the newer ones. Thanks again.

As far I understood this article only the installer was fixed (problems installing DX on a XP RTM, XP SP1) and a Bing Bar (*lol*) was included....

So I think there is no need to wait for an updated DX, because we don't use an installer here (otherwise something went wrong here :lol: ).

There's a couple of items that a review of the updates page for 2K on FDV's site has revealed. Nothing urgent, nor maybe even important, as 2K has probably already slowly sunk into the West for a lot of folks. Just not me.

The Windows Media Player 9 installer link, MPSetup.exe, is pretty much dead. Didn't take me anywhere worth going. So I tried a web search (Yahoo), which is getting to be a frequent occurrence for me where M$ software is concerned. That brought up a couple of free files sites, the second of which (http://www.freewarefiles.com/downloads_counter.php?programid=4643) was merely a link back to M$'s site, but guess what? It worked! So it's still available, and it's a direct download to boot.

Now the only remaining issue is how long will it last...

The DirectX 9.0C (standard) link is also pretty much dead, but my luck in finding a M$ link didn't hold. There are some FTP sites where I was able to obtain a copy but most were in non-English speaking domains, they weren't all the same size, which might mean different languages, and who knows how long they'll last. Not saying there's anything to do here, just being thorough.

Another item is that Windows2000-KB908531-v2-x86-ENU.EXE includes the note "FDV not recommended". According to his page, Windows2000-KB842773-x86-ENU.EXE should also include that.

Last but not least, I gotta say, "Don't do it!" doesn't do much for me, and apparently others are confused as well (). Wouldn't a relevant link () would be a good idea?

You're not alone. Other MSFN members are helping keep 2K alive with unofficial patches.

Hmmm. I found the direct download link for directx_9c_redist.exe, but Microsoft seems to have replaced the file on the server. Now, the size of the downloaded file is 1.3KB. Seems we need to find another (trusted) source for this file. Any suggestions?

Well, Windows2000-KB908531-v2-x86-ENU.EXE is included for the sake of completeness, even though later release contain an updated SHELL32.DLL file. See, Windows2000-KB908531-v2-x86-ENU.EXE contains the file VERCLSID.EXE. It is the installation of this file that FDV does not recommend. However, in case someone needs this file (for some reason I know not what), it's listed. Perhaps I should make this update's situation clearer.

I inherited the upkeep of this page. The "Don't do it!" remark was made before my involvement. I agree, it's not really helpful without an explanatory link. Thank you for supplying one.

Boy, I admit that did not quite compute. :)

Is the later release on the list? If so, which one?
