With such dramatic fall in prices I don't see any reasons why not having 4GB of RAM and a Core2Duo (or equivalent) that can handle all default services loaded at start-up to run during games, etc. With the machine in my signature using Vista Business x64, I have NO services disabled or any other tweaks applied and it flies through games, including Crysis Warhead.

I still disable useless services. It really does help with performance and system responsiveness. Less to start up with, less to hog bandwidth on ram, disk, or to run in the background doing who knows what. Like indexing, and performance monitoring/logging.
