Sumptin's Screwy Goin' On Here

Guys/Gals,

I have run 98SE forever and just ran into something VERY strange.

I stopped updating when Micro$haft turned their backs on us all and

stopped issuing patches for 98SE. My last download was Micro$haft

Security Bulletin MS06-026 on June 13, 2006.

I have the old (and now NOT supported) BigFix Consumer Edition v1.7.6.0

and when I run it, it says I am missing:

Windows 98SE Embedded Web Fonts Bug Fix MS06-002

(BTW I'm 99.999999% I have it installed)

Windows 98SE JScript v5.6 Bug Fix MS06-023 Dated 3-9-07, NOT the 6-13-06 one.

(BTW I'm 99.999999% I have the 6-13-06 one installed)

When I go to the WindowsUpdate site and go the "Scan For Updates" route

it says that I need these:

Security Update for Windows 98 (KB918547)

Download size: 145 KB

Security Update for Windows 98 (KB917344)

Download size: 328 KB

Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 Service Pack 1 (KB911562)

Download size: 797 KB

Security Update for Windows 98 (KB908519)

Download size: 210 KB

Security Update, March 7, 2002 MS02-014

Download size: 834 KB

HOWEVER, all of the above were installed as they became available except for

the MS02-014 one. Hey, I'm human.

Now for the REAL screwy part. When I go to the WindowsUpdate site and

do the: "In the left pane, under See Also, select Windows Update Catalog."

"Select Find Updates for Microsoft Operating Systems."

"Select the operating system and language of your choice."

"Click Search"

routine, it says that I'm missing 76 (no typo--76) updates. WTF????

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Hi

I posted this info about Win 98SE updates to another message. I am going to post it again for you. It may be of help to you. With the Maximus Decim Cumulative Update ver.3.05 (New) you can have all the MS updates and more ... USB and such .... my other post ............

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to this "sister" forum dealing with Win 98SE and you will find all your updates there for Win 98SE plus extras.

... http://www.msfn.org/board/Windows-9x-Member-Project-f91.html ....

Look on Page 2 for this update by Maximus Decim ....

.... Maximus Decim Cumulative Update ver.3.05 (New!) .... inside that update is a list of what to put on your machine step by step after you freshly install Win 98SE. ... then look for

... Maximus Decim InternetExplorer 6.0sp1 Component Update 2.4 .... on Page 1 ... that will be on the list as one of the updates ....

I use Zone Alarm v4.5.594 with Win 98SE ... it works very well and later versions seem to be resource hogs and more than you need, this version is a good, simple firewall .... you can find that version on Google or at Zone Alarm itself .... get that first update and follow his (Maximus Decim) instructions and steps .... you can find almost everything else on that list at this site.

... http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#HHU ...........

.... quite welcome ! Yes, I just use his (Maximus Decim) updates as they come out. After I get everything just the way I want it ... Use CCleaner for junk and some good registry cleaners, a Scandisk and Defrag and after I have all my settings and things the way I want everything then I use Ghost 8.3 to have a nice backup that only takes minutes to reinstall, if something happens or the hard drive goes bad ... but you don't have hours or days of work getting everything set up again ... maybe just a few updates.

I was posting some similar stuff under "Newbie is Desperate" . I have that Zone Alarm version link there, if you care to try that version and some others have posted some good stuff for that message.

There is another Windows 98SE update pack ... it is old now and the fellow (Gape) has a "work in progress" on a newer version. However, I still run this older version first, right after a fresh install of Windows 98SE and then I start with the Maximus Decim updates. He has a neat Windows 98SE Animated Boot and Shutdown Logo (Optional) and I like that on my notebook ....

...... http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html ...........

You can check it out if you care to.

Duff, just to be 100% clear:

1. You install the factory Win 98SE CD

2. Load the Unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack 2.1a

3. Load the Maximus Decim Cumulative Update v3.05 For Windows 98SE

4. Tweak with updated drivers, load proggies, etc...

5. Clean 'er up

6. Ghost the C

By the way, thanks for pointing me to "Newbie is Desperate". Those links

were KILLER. That dude Big_Al is gonna save me a TON of time with those

DOS floppies for Ghosting images. I REALLY liked that bit about automatically

booting to the desktop after Ghost has run. He sure knows his way around that

program. I found out that Ghost 2003 is the last Ghost to include a DOS version

and is compatable with Windows NTFS too, so if you do a little digging on Google

you most likely will be able to find it.

Oh, I also need to ask you about something said in "Newbie is Desperate":

Yea, a hosts file is good - probably the single most effective way to keep

malware off your system. I use the MVPS hosts file."

How do I "lock it" to keep it from being changed as I've read some bad guys can do?

Duffy, how DO you lock it?

Type to me.

Hi,

The only way I know how to "lock down" the Hosts file is to use WinPatrol with Scotty the little barking dog .... I really don't lock down my hosts file because Scotty will "bark" if anyone tries to change your hosts file. The later versions of WinPatrol work with Win 98SE but I like this version .... WinPatrol v7.0.1.0 ... it is free and does a lot of other things also ... guards your computer as you surf .... Scotty will bark if someone tries to change things .... you may try the later versions and this version ... just like this version myself ... does what I need. I am also sure others will have others ways of locking the host file ... you will hear from them. When you update that Host file (which I also use) that you mentioned earlier, Scotty will bark usually within 3 minutes to let you know that your host file has changed. You go to the last tab ... Options, click on it and you will see a box there to "lock" your Hosts file.

This is the latest version from FileHippo ....

... http://www.filehippo.com/download_winpatrol/ .... that other version will be on Google somewhere .... Will answer your other questions later on ... short of time.

6. Ghost the C

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been awhile since I have done a fresh install since I have the Ghost backups ... I usually just run his (Maximus Decim) updates as they come out. So I went back to check his "order of install " list ... this is his list that comes in the current package ....

and updates 282949, 260710, 285895.

15.Reinstall DirectX 9.0c.

And still!!! Basically, Windows 98SE supports work with

operative memory in the size up to 2Gb, but not all so is simple.

Therefore, if Windows 98SE that is installed on a computer

with operative memory greater than 512 Mb:

1.In BIOS sets the size of aperture AGP in minimal

Value (64 mbytes are usual) for economy of addresses.

2. Sets the maximal cache size from 512Mb up to 64Mb -

to whom as it is pleasant - too for economy of addresses.

For this purpose it is used MaxFileCache=xxx (where xxx -

the cache size in KILOBYTES) in section [vcache] a file System.ini

If all works and is left, if glitches proceed:

3.If memory has more 1Gb, we add MaxPhysPage=40000 if from 1Gb

up to 768Mb - MaxPhysPage=30000 in section [386enh] a file System.ini

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I am thinking that you should do his #1 and #2 first and then if you want that Win 98SE Boot and Shutdown logo do it as #3 and then go back to his list and install his update package and the rest of what he has listed as he instructs. He has more knowledge than I do about Windows 98SE and I go with what he has on his list. I only run the Unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack 2.1a as something extra ... I run the whole package and then it will be updated with Maximus Decim's update package. If you want that Windows 98SE Animated Boot and Shutdown Logo .... your machine will say "Windows 98 Seccond Edition" instead of just Windows 98 when you boot up and log off .... and it's colorful also! ... other than that, the Unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack 2.1a could be skipped .... Now there is one thing I change ... I only put .NET Framework 1.1 and the updates on ... I don't install .NET Framework 2.0 .... I have it ready to install ... right now, I just use version 1 ... I am still wondering if I need version 2 for Win 98SE .... that would be a good thread for someone to start ... is version 2 needed for Win 98SE ... what benefits would there be? .... I do run into a program once in awhile that requires version 2 ... still researching all that .... would like to hear opinions. I also don't install #13 - SAPI 4.0, SAPI 5.1 ... I have them also stored away but do I really need those 2 downloads ... not sure what they do ... My computer seems to run fine without them ... I have been thinking, I may install both

.NET Framework 2.0 and SAPI 4.0, SAPI 5.1 ... I can always take them off by running the Ghost backup ... I'm just not sure I need them ... maybe someone can post some info on them ... not sure what SAPI 4.0, SAPI 5.1 do. Also, for #10 ... I use Media Player 6.4 and the update 320920 ... I add Media Player Classic with the "last" K-Lite codec package for Win 98SE and also XMPlay ... I like that little player, when you add the plug-ins and such ... small player but a good sound ... just my preference.

... http://www.un4seen.com/xmplay.html .....

After everything is installed, before I make a Ghost copy ... I run the system to check everything is OK, maybe a day or at least a day ... then I clean the registry, delete junk with some cleaners, CCleaner and such ... do a scandisk and defrag last and then make the Ghost copy ... want the new install to be as clean as possible to have for future use ... so that now becomes my "fresh install" if something goes wrong or my hard drive goes bad .... but all my settings and programs, updates are done ... just add newer updates as they come out or if I have to use the Ghost backup. You could do a Ghost right after you install Win 98SE and the above updates and then another one later on when you finally get your machine just the way you want it .... then if you would mess something up ... you wouldn't have to start all over again installing Win 98SE ... just start with the updates already installed.

Hope this is of some help ... this is what I pretty much do ... others may have things to add or ideas of their own ...
