More information is required. Which model motherboard do you have?

No Gigabyte motherboards listed on their site with the Intel 801 chipset support a socket 370 and 1024MB RAM.

Any current gaming computers should require the following as minimum requirements:

OH MY GOD! You're not serious, are you?

Lets face it, although you can assemble a pretty decent computer for web-surfing, dowloading and for Office applications, running NEWER games is IMPOSSIBLE. You don't even have AGP support! Honestly, buy a new pc.... and well, that 5.1 soundcard is just useless, unless you wish to connect you system to a decent set of speakers.... it won't make your pc run any faster.

You could probably assemble a not-so-bad pcfor gaming with the following specs:

RAM: 2GB DDR2

CPU: Athlon 64 3200+ (the higher the better) for single core (if you want to use Win98) or a Pentium Dual Core 2.4 Ghz (WinXP/Vista, Core2 is better, but this should do the trick quite nicely, and no, Pentium D isn't the same thing as Pentium Dual Core);

GPU: A GeForce 8600 GT (XP/VISTA only) should work quite well... if you don't push to insane resolutions with high AA settings. If you put everything on low you can probably get a 6800/7600

MOTHERBOARD: PCI-E by all means!!!! (unless you want Windows 98) The reason for getting a PCI-E capable MoBo, other than PCI-E being faster than AGP, is that the graphics card's prices differ... A PCI-E 6800 is cheaper than its AGP version.

OS: Vista if you wish to use DX10 (AND got the GF8600), XP for DX9 gaming without problems, 98 if you like the challenge of getting the games to work

That box is most definitely past the "upgrading" point. Socket 370, plain old PCI (no PCI-E nor AGP), old very slow CPU, etc.

And the "upgrade" parts you're talking about are nowhere near enough to run "newer games". A Geforce 6200 is very, very slow by today's standards. SB Live 5.1? I was going to list one on ebay a while ago (the platinum version), but I've seen plenty of them finish at $0.99 with no bids at all (tells you how much they're worth). Modern motherboards have FAR better sound onboard than those old cards provide.

At this point, you're basically looking at another PC. It doesn't have to be expensive though. I've seen significantly faster 2nd hand computers go for like $50 before (sometimes even free). Lots of people are getting rid of old computers (or parts even). I've sold an old P4 3GHz for cheap a couple months ago (around $100 -- including SATA DVD writer, memory card reader and all), and given away a few 2.x GHz ones, so 800MHz (0.8GHz)... Anything you can buy in a store, at any price, will be MUCH faster than this. This is very much like the PC I had like 8 years ago...

As most of those guys mentioned, those specs you listed there is very old and outdated.

However, you I suggest these low end parts that ain't too bad:

AMD Athlon 5000+ X2 AM2 - $74

GeForce 8400 GS - $44

2GB DDR2 RAM - $38

And you can get a cheap low end AM2 motherboard for like $69 or maybe less.

These parts will do so much better than the ones you listed.

A motherboard that supports a 800mhz probably maxes out at 1gh or maybe 1.2ghz, today's CPUs are dual cores running at 3ghz (so that's a virtual 6ghz CPU), so as you can see, you're old hardware can't compare.

Plus new SATA hard drives are way faster than your ancient IDE drive, ram is way faster, video cards are around 8x faster.

Whoa! i810, stop right there. I had one, worked on many, even on their best day these were horrible. Retire it or keep it functional only for testing dangerous apps and viruses!

More importantly, purchasing 512 MB of SDRAM will absolutely kill you. Even at the cheapest places it will kill you. Do not buy this memory! 512 MB of SDRAM will cost more than 2 GB of DDR2.

Buy a current motherboard, if it must run Win9x you know where to research it: Compatible Hardware with Windows 9x. If it does not require Win9x you can buy almost anything but make sure it is DDR2 so that RAM is cheap (or if DDR3, RAM will be cheap in the near future).

Skip this upgrade, that money will be much better spent and go a much longer way on new tech.

EDIT: as of this date, DDR2 is cheap! Doh! DDR3 will be cheap soon. (but not soon enough for me).

One other thing I remember about those i810 (Intel Application Accelerator) boards. Beware of the BIOS. I cannot remember any 48bit LBA updates. There may have been some by some mobo maker, but without it the HDD situation is very dangerous. Even some of the sub-136GB drives might not be recognized.

I’ve upgraded/refurbished about a dozen turn of the century computers in the last several years. It’s a hobby and I give most of them away.

So my opinion is:

“Will newer games work?” No.

“Will it be worth it?” Not at those prices.

“Will it all work good?” Maybe

I don’t know why but about half of the old motherboards I’ve worked on would work after being upgraded. I’ve seen identical motherboards where one would accept a faster processor and video card and one wouldn’t. I get parts for little or nothing so it’s not a big deal if it doesn’t work. But spending the money you plan on would be too risky to me.

If you decide to do it. Upgrade to the latest bios and hunt around on the web to see if someone has modded bios for your motherboard to bring it more up to date than the original manufacturers. There are Promise ATA 133 cards for larger and faster hard drives and Tualatin adapters that can use a 1.4ghz processor. But even with all that it won’t come close to what a newer computer can do.

Good luck. It will be a learning experience, I can promise you that much.

Replace the 9800GT with the HD4830 or the HD4850.

P35 is good. P45 is better. Gigabyte P45 is amazing.

Western Digital SE16 640GB. Overall fastest 7200RPM drive so far. Lots of storage. Cheap.

The 350W PSU is a joke. Haha?

400-500W for future upgradeability. Its also not good to work a PSU near its limits. Reduces life, and less efficient.

You can get the quiet Antec Sonata III case with a 550W 80plus (that means its efficient) PSU.
