Which driver for XP install on SATA drive: no floppy, using nLite

Howdy, all. Thanks for the nice forum, and for helping me out. I just got a laptop with Vistax64 Home on it and I want to "downgrade" to XP x64 Pro. I downloaded a supposedly untouched iso of XP Pro x64. I burned it and tried to install it, but it hung up with "STOP: 0x0000007b ...." error check your hard drive for errors and try again. Well, chkdsk found nothing wrong with the hard drive, and finally after looking about, I realize that that error is probably coming up because I need a SATA controller driver because XP doesn't have one on the install CD. Hmmm, having no floppy drive to load drivers at the F6 option, it seems that the easiest option is to use nLite (I've just started using, and really dig it!) and shove the driver into the XP boot CD and re-burn. My main issue is that...

I can't figure out/ find which driver to use. ! :blushing:

I tried to add the ahcix64s.inf via nLite to a couple of boot disc burn attempts, but to no avail. It still stops at the same point with the same error. I suppose that's ok, because those useless burnt CD-Rs make for good microwave oven entertainment. Anyway, if you've made it this far in my saga, below are some possibly relevant specs from the machine. I would sincerely appreciate your help. Thanks in advance!

HP actually gives a non-nLite way to accomplish the install of XP on SATA drive without floppy, but it seemed much trickier than nLite:

[drivers being used are disk.sys, hpdskflt.sys]

CONTROLLERS:

[all using atapi.sys, ataport.sys]

ATA Channel 0

ATA Channel 1

Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller [also using pciide.sys, pciidex.sys]

BUS ADAPTERS:

AMD AHCI Compatible RAID Controller [using ahcix64s.sys]

AMD RAID Console [this is not being used, apparently - there are no drivers installed and it's not running]

Microsoft iSCSI Initiator [for network devices, right? -nothing to do with my hdd? using msiscsi.sys, iscsilog.sys]

Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller (2x) [not for hdd, right?]

Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller (4x) [not for hdd, right?]

Cheers and thanks! :thumbup

I downloaded a supposedly untouched iso of XP Pro x64.

Both the supposedly and the untouched makes me think that there are large probabilities that it is a "touched" version.

Can you set in the BIOS (temporarily) the SATA disk to IDE (compatibility) mode?

No. The only useful BIOS option is that I can choose to boot from a USB diskette key/USB hard drive. HP is a little control freakish?

It still seems to me that the ahcix64s.sys (et al) is the correct SATA Controller Driver. Does anybody else have an opinion on that? If this is the correct driver, all I need is a true XP64 disk, and I need to integrate this amd64 driver into this disk (which I don't seem to have?)

Thanks,

There is no such option in this pc's bios.

I did find an 'authentic' (MSDN) download of XP64, and put the ahcix64s.inf driver into a fresh image of it with nLite. Install stopped at the same point:

Stop: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFFADF976323C0, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

Does anybody concur that I'm trying to insert the correct driver for this situation, or should I be scouring the net for something else?

I haven't gone through all the links on this page yet [ http://forums13.itrc.hp.com/service/forums...hreadId=1254700 ] but it does show that somebody has put XP32 on a similar machine. Perhaps I need to take out some of the drivers that are on the original XP disk as they hinted at, while putting the proper driver in there?

And the search continues...

Right, right.

Well, which drivers do you suggest that I try to put into my genuine XP x64 disc? The one I've been trying doesn't have a txtsetup.oem, I assume because it is a PnP driver. Does this mean that it is certainly not the correct driver? Do I need to acquire another [free] driver? If so, could someone give me a hint? Do I need to have the atapi.sys or ataport.sys to load XP onto this SATA drive? I thought that those are on the XP disc. ?

Thanks for your continued patience with me.

It looks like those are all x86 drivers.

I tried a 'slightly' different driver: ahcix64.sys (not ahcix64s.sys). This one had an associated txtsetup.oem file, so I used that to integrate via nLite, and the boot stopped at a new screen: file ahcix64.sys not found.

This is where I downloaded the driver:

Ok just for giggles (I used to get that before in the earlier days).

Please do the following:

Move the txtsetup.oem file into the x64 folder like in the pic I added.

Then after running nLite but BEFORE making iso put the sys file in the I386 folder. (Just so that setup can see it for sure)

Hopefully if you found the right drivers everything will be fine...

Quite painfully obvious fact would be that you have dl'ed and added the wrong drivers.

Remember this:

You need just the 64x drivers not the 32 ones.

Most of the time they come in the same download so make sure and sort them out.

maybe post a link or a model and make of your PC so we can help find and sort out the right drivers?

The same as above: dv-71130us by HP. AMD Turion x2 64, etc.

The drivers were listed as the x64 drivers. When the choice in nLite came to ask which to install, I chose only the x64 ones. But I would imagine that iastore.sys shouldnt even be showing up, as I thought that was an intel driver... but ive got an AMD board, dont I? Id actually prefer to run x86 windows on this machine if thats at all possible.... Ugh... vista home p***es me off.

I finally have the 32 bit XP install working.

I have been everywhere looking for the right files and think I found the solution.

This is on a HP DV7-1130us - AMD Turion X2 64

I found this on the HP forums and it's what worked for me. The fouth post lists the AMD SATA AHCI download which contains both 32 bit and 64 bit formats.

http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums...hreadId=1277575

I slipstreamed the XP pro CD with the driver folder, and was sure to only select the x86 (32 bit) option. I presume the X64 would work but for this application I needed 32 bit Windows XP.

Here is a copy of the download link for convenience - http://www.mediafire.com/?azwrxx0xkrp

Now that XP is installing, I hope I'll be able to get everything working. The same link above references problems getting the sound to work.
