Whats so bad about IE6?

On the original question "what to install first?"

The first thing I'd install is drivers and get all the hardware working. Depending on how your drivers are packaged, an app like 7zip or WinRar might have to be the first install. 98 has no built in unzipping software. Get your basic configuring done, network, display, sound, explorer, folder prefs, etc. Then install the update package of your choice. Finish configuring. I'd install the security apps next, then user apps.

Internet Explorer is the biggest vulnerability in a 9X system and one of the biggest memory drains. Most any alternate browser is better. Some apps need IE or some of its components. There's alternative choices for most of them. If you install 98 using 98lite, you're more likely to run into instances of software needing IE6 components that aren't there. If you let the CD install IE normally, then remove it using IEradicator, it leaves a few more files behind and quite often it's the files the other apps need. IMO, 98 is a much better OS without Internet Explorer.

If you have room for another hard drive and your BIOS allows you to choose the boot order of the hard drives, you could put 2 copies of 98 in one PC, one with IE, one without, and see if your apps need it and which ones. In order to do this, you'll have to build each OS individually without the other drive installed at the time. Build one OS, switch drives, build the other. Install both and choose which you'll load from the BIOS. I'm running 2 dual boot systems in one PC this way. The first is 98FE (with IE6) and Win2K. The other is 98SE (no IE) and Linux.

I agree with you 100%. Basically, after Microsoft used IE to kill Netscape, they let IE6 rot on the vine. IE6 is definitely the biggest vulnerability in 98, and if you uninstall it (along with ms java) and use any alternate browser, your system will be much more secure.

I have been using 98 lite after running 98SE2ME and have had problems crop up after removing IE (for instance, not being able to open 'My Documents' in the start menu and problems with Zone Alarm not always loading correctly at startup, forcing a reboot.)

Probably most of you have seen this, but for a chuckle, go to this guy's 'Internet Explorer Is Evil' website:

http://toastytech.com/evil/index.html

(He hates Win98 because of its active desktop/IE Integration, but don't let that bother you!)

98 is not only more secure without IE being integrated into the OS, it's also much more stable and reliable. When all the MS apps that integrate into the OS are stripped out, 98 becomes very easy to secure, not to mention much faster.

On my lite98SE testbox, I'm trying a different approach to dealing with apps that "need" Internet Explorer. Instead of installing IE, I'm profiling the apps thru Dependency Walker and identifying the specific files they need from IE. Just getting started with this, so no idea how well it will work yet.

If you decide that you do want to keep IE, upgrade to IE6 and make it one of the first updates you install.

Hi Rick,

You don't need a 2nd HDD for 2 or more instances of Win98, just use System Commander and install them to different partitions on the same HDD.

In theory the best order would be:

* Unzipping software - 7zip, winrar

* A firewall

* IE 6

* Revolutions Pack 7

* Drivers

Well this is what i am using:

Autopatcher dec 2007 pack

Kernel 3.6

Thats it from this forum.

I can't use the following:

82.69 , works good for games, but terrible for videos

Uberskin - Impossible to uninstall from your computer, unless you reformat

Revolution pack - Impossible to uninstall from your computer, 32bit icons doesn't work with Nvidia cards.

What i am using thats not on MSFN:

eXPerience Pack

Have 32bit icons and doesn't mess with your system files, and plus you can uninstall with ease, no issues. :thumbup

15.Reinstall DirectX 9.0c.

And still!!! Basically, Windows 98SE supports work with

operative memory in the size up to 2Gb, but not all so is simple.

Therefore, if Windows 98SE that is installed on a computer

with operative memory greater than 512 Mb:

1.In BIOS sets the size of aperture AGP in minimal

Value (64 mbytes are usual) for economy of addresses.

2. Sets the maximal cache size from 512Mb up to 64Mb -

to whom as it is pleasant - too for economy of addresses.

For this purpose it is used MaxFileCache=xxx (where xxx -

the cache size in KILOBYTES) in section [vcache] a file System.ini

If all works and is left, if glitches proceed:

3.If memory has more 1Gb, we add MaxPhysPage=40000 if from 1Gb

up to 768Mb - MaxPhysPage=30000 in section [386enh] a file System.ini

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

... maybe this will be of some help as a guide or you may actually decide to use it.
