windows 7 beta and vlite

Recommended Posts

I installed Win 7 on a Dell Mini - successfully. I want to take out components that I wont use, like DVD Maker. I went to vLite, but it looks like its more trouble than its worth, with the WAIK, etc. any thoughts on a quick and easy install?

Hello aviv00 :hello:

As you should know vLite has been designed for Windows Vista.Windows 7 as it is currently available is almost the same regarding the using of any software however some features may not always work.Therefore vLite could work with some troubleshooting :}

You must keep in mind that the actual version of Windows 7 is distributed for beta testing and is not suitable for productive work

Have fun with the 7 :angel

Yeah leave it as is..

vLite was not made for Windows7 and works "Mostly", hence testing is needed and you'll usually find that you removed something you need...

vLite-ing Windows7 is NOT for the casual user.

Thanks. Im not a casual user, Im a dork. But Im also old so my penchant for spending hours just to remove a core app has faded.

I have made a vlited Windows 7 installation a few days ago, with the ini file from Kazuni as basesetting and some small things changed to make it fit my needs.

After installation I found out that Windows update was not working anymore, although I had selected it to keep the files and be sure I would not remove things I would need for it.

Missing part; Lanmanager.

But, to be short; at the end I have decided to install the normal Windows 7 iso again and only disable services. On my harddisk the installation is larger then needed now, but the install is working fine and no error messages because of missing components.

When Windows 7 is a fact and there is something like 7lite, I will defenately use it, but at the moment for the beta I will leave it as it is.

So I agree with Kelsenellenelvian ;)

beginners users could use vlite to remove langs drivers and more without having any problem

advanced users could use dism to add packages / hotfix to windows 7 before using vlite

and save more space and the system will be still stable

and about beta thing

windows 7 beta is not new os at all its windows 6.1 based on vista

just more based on windows server 2008 kernel which mean its much stable lets say then vista beta as it was

lots of review said their opinion on windows 7 there are not good reason not to install it

Used the same .ini. I have zero problems. Windows Update, for me, works like a charm whether automatic or manual. Only issue I faced was not being able to see my network drive in the map. But keeping lanmanager would fix that. Either way I can map the drive with it's firmware.

Going to keep using this as long as I can.

I'm still trying to figure out what I like more.. a heavily vLited Vista or a slightly vLited 7. Vista for productivity, 7 for the interface. Tough call.

Hi MPalmz,

When it did not work so well I would probably do the same as you do.

But to be honoust, I have installed Windows 7, switched off some services (see my topic in the Windows 7 forum) and after that and some small tweaking with register and other settings, I am very satisfied with my Windows 7 installation.

Everything I need is working, everything I do not need is switched off and not visible for the outside world.

Probably my small addings in vLite caused my problems, I know. And probably the ini file itself is working fine, although there were some things I had to enable again because of using office and mediaplayer.

And as said; when Windows 7 is coming out and I will decide to buy it, then vLite will defenately be used to make a nice small installationdvd at that moment ;)

May be a little off topic, but where I was very happy with the small setup of nlite, I was very dissappointed about the huge install of vlite.

vlite itself is larger, but installing waik.... 1.xxGb of waist which I am not using, but which I do need to use vlite.

I really hope there will come a solution for that. It is very userunfriendly to let people download an iso, burn it, install it and then install vlite.

And I do understand this has to do with copyright ;)

No worries. My run with Windows 7 is over. I've uninstalled it! It had nothing to do with errors or bugs, in fact I think vLite must have helped a little because my brother kept his installation untouched and his machine is a little buggy. But I've gone back to Vista simply because of compatibility. I need to start using my PC for some business affairs and I ran into a few compatibility problems with 7. I can't run the current stable version of Skype, for example. Once 7 is fully ready, like you I'm sure I'll buy it.

I totally agree with you about nLite! My heavily vLited vista feels like an untouched XP, but it's running on much, much better hardware. I miss Windows XP, and with nLite it was an unstoppable arrangement. vLite isn't even close to what nLite was, but I believe that the good doc' Nuhi has done everything that could be done to help us amputate our Vista pains. The only thing that keeps me on Vista and vLite is the fact that I spent (wasted) $1xx on it! I better make use of it.

Best of luck with 7 everyone!

How to use Windows 7 DISM by Muiz

Q : What is DISM?

A : Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM)

Q : Why this guide?

A : Cause there is NO information about this tool out yet.

DISM is the replacement for the older deployment tools from Microsoft, like PKMGR and PEIMG

WAIK doesnt support this yet, so when you want to use WAIK, use it from a Vista or XP, not from a Windows 7

When you work from Windows 7, you dont need to install DISM, cause its already in it.

You can basicly do anything to your image with DISM, even aplly unattended settings to it , so you can use it unattended without XML.

How to get DISM?

Mount your Windows 7 and go to the System32 folder of the ofline image, and copy the "DISM" folder and "DISM.exe" to your Vista System32 folder.

Register the dll's inside(Some cant be registered)

Dll's :

CbsProvider.dll

CompatProvider.dll

DismCore.dll

DismCorePS.dll

DismProv.dll

DmiProvider.dll

IntlProvider.dll

MsiProvider.dll

SmiProvider.dll

UnattendProvider.dll

WimProvider.dll

For x64 users, you also have to grab the "SysWOW64" folder and the "DISM.exe" from there.

What i did was also added "DISM.exe" to my WAIK folder to make it even more easy to use.

Here is a small list with commands and a few examples, what you can do with dism.

You can get the example of each command by putting "/?" without the quotes after the command.

I did a few in this guide, but you can do this for each command.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DISM.exe [dism_options] {WIM_command} [<WIM_arguments>]

¿How Remove alls Versions from the Install.wim?

only let Ultimate

Thanks!

Hello,

open the ISO with PowerISo go to folder Sources and delete the ei.cfg.. Then save the new image... burn it and you can choose Home basic, Home Premium, Ultimate and Business.

when you have a vlited Win7 and choose home premium at the begin of the installation there will be an error message that the product key is not for this version...

after vlited Win7 go to Sources and delete the ei.cfg and then you can succesfully install Win7 in a Home premium Version but you can't use the beta keys from MS

Sry for my bad english :(

  • 1 month later...

if u can enter sysprep, at beginning of oobe, then you should have no problem using windows update

to install all hotfixes, drivers, etc, depending on your need s . and then generalize, and capture.

For example; I find it alot quicker when integrating vista sp2

to 1st intsall vista sp1 on second partition. 2nd enter sysprep on oobe.

3rd connect to internet. 4th install windows installer 4.5 5th run window update.

(for vista i only install OS updates, but win 7, if possible you can also install

your drivers via windows update) 6th finally after all updates and reboots are complete i

install SP2 RC1 or whatever. on reboot i run compcln.exe. and using sysprep, i generalize and shut

down. boot in my case xp, then i run 3rd party disk clean up and disk defragmenter, to remove

install log files temp files etc etc.

finally capture a nice sp2 v.113, v.286 yadda yadda. then use vlite to customite into a nice complete

iso. works fine. and is faster than integrating using vlite.

so if you can use sysprep and then capture with petool cmd prompt then that 's it. easy and quick.

As far as windows 7 impression with me is that it looks like a vista platform with extras that possibley

will end up in vista sp3, unless microsoft is confident that they can sell windows 7 as an other than vista OS? I think they are just fishing for ideas and such until they have worked the kinks out and have a unique OS as removed from vista as possible. to call it "the new platform" In other words;

windows 7 is to vista as windows milenium edition was to windows 98. I predict it will be released in 2010 as an upgrade DVD to Vista priced just right ! lmao.
