Some may have been downloaded/archived by some members, some may have been only "mirrors" (and the file is still retrievable from somewhere else), etc. jaclaz
cc333 Posted July 21, 2018 Posted July 21, 2018 Here's a temporary mirror of Dosghost and DOS Solutions: http://209.65.191.189/ Don't hammer it too hard, as it's hosted by a VM running MS-DOS! Plus, I don't have much bandwidth, so it won't be the fastest. I can't keep it up 24/7, but if it's offline, PM me and I'll fix it. c

Jarsin Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 (edited) I tried to find a current virus scanner for DOS other than clamAV. I found that there are was a free bitdefender MSDOS edition until 2004. But it's impossible for me to find that distribution, which was at last freeware. I didn't managed to get bdcdos.zip, bd.rar or kit_msdosedition.zip from any site on the web. I managed to find out, that bddosc.exe was part of eg. bitdefender Professional 7.2-11 (bitdefender_prof_v72-11.exe). But it crashes when using it under DOSbox or vDOSplusED in certain cases. Also I'm not sure, if it really uses the updates downloaded from that version installed in Windows 98 virtualbox (6.1). The update process updates, but closes with an error message, but in the plugins folder it downloaded a bunch of new files from the current bitdefender upgrade server. Though I didn't tried yet to run it in a FreeDOS virtualbox VM. Jarsin Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 (edited) The GPF seems to be related to djgpp https://groups.google.com/g/microsoft.public.win3x_wfw_dos/c/MnFN9_c3Hw0 http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/v2faq/faq18_6.html Maybe it's more reliable in protected Mode real DOS, than in a MS-DOS Prompt in Windows 98. EDIT: I got the same error when rebooting into MSDOS (windows 98) and cwsdpmi.exe (v7) in the same directory. Maybe I need to install himem.sys or the like. Edited February 16, 2021 by Jarsin
Wunderbar98 Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 Hi Jarsin. ROSE SWE's heuristic based virus scanner (rhbvs_v5-20.zip, ~4MB) works in DOS and was last updated in 2021. You may want to give that a go, from DOS of course. It can also be run from a DOS prompt (COMMAND.COM window) during a Windows 98 graphic session. Not sure about FreeDOS compatability. http://rose-swe.bplaced.net/dl/ The program provides English output although most documentation is German. Running 'rHBVS.EXE' provides English usage information. Example output below. RainyShadow Posted July 17, 2021 Posted July 17, 2021 I just found a Wikia site with lists of recommended games for MS-DOS, Win98, and many more platforms - /v/'s Recommended Games Wiki. It has short descriptions, and often includes links to modernized GOG/Steam/etc. versions, Hi-Res packs, and engine ports/remakes. 1

After that you can run dx.com (uses less memory) or dx.exe. If the DX is running in the window on Windows, you may see garbled characters as the window border. You can prevent this by setting the ASCII character set to On (under Settings / Configuration). Long filenames are turned on with ALT-1 as usual. The best character set for this program is code page 437. This is set in Config.sys. Windows always sets 850 as the default. ( country = 049,437,......)
