x64 - Server 2008 or Vista Ultimate

I'm looking at Vista Ultimate & Sever 2008 x64 versions. Which one performs better once vLited?

I read that Server 2008 does not have all the DRM junk, so thats why it performs way better out of the box. Does vLite remove enough of that to reduce the performance gap?

Which one comes out lighter on the system?

Best use a Vista Business x64 copy for vlite. Who needs the Ultimate extras? I sure as heck never will.

I successfully slipstreamed SP1 in an old Vista Business x64 image.

After that I slipped in the hotfixes, added some AHCI and Intel drivers and kicked out a lot of crap. If you want, I can post my Lastsession file for you.

I tried to get Windows Media 11 in there without DRM, but that didn't work. You have to either not install Windows Media at all during install, or choose to use a different WM release, if you want to NOT install the DRM crap. For me the WMedia plugin for Firefox is enough of the WM nonsense. I open all my movies with either KM-Player or Mediaplayer Classic anyway, except for some streams in my browser.

By the way, for Moz Firefox I can highly recommend:

Unfortunatelly I don't have Vista Business edition. Vista Ultimate will have to do.

What about Server 2008 x64? Does it work with vLite?

I have recently vlite win2k8 x64 and yes it works. However with removing a few components the Add Features feature does not work that well, if at all for some components. Still trying to figure it out....

It looks like he only removes a few "components". I guess the add features still works with this config?

To answer your question, in my own experience Server 2008 and Vista SP1 have same performance. If you think that with Server you will get better performance think again.

I give you also a chart.

Great information in that chart! I've never run XP64 myself. My current OS is w2k8ent x64, and my gut feeling is that it has a slight performance edge over Vista x64.

It would have been interesting to see Server 2003 among the contestants.

I can't remember if it's neccesary to work or just to be legal, but you're supposed to use Ultimate with quad-core processors.

Also you don't have Media Center, Movie Maker, all that crap. For me, I would take Home Premium or Ultimate over Business anyday.

The Vista Ultimate EULA is for dual cpu systems and up. A quad is fine since its single socket.
