Seems like a kind of crazy thing to do...

It's not crazy, it's just moronic. I'm sure he'll have some absurd excuse why... until his PC gets RPC exploited to hell and back.

it should work just fine. However, I've got to ask - why on earth are you running XP with no service packs?!

Seems like a kind of crazy thing to do...

My computer at home doesn't have any service packs installed... but I do have USB 2.0 functionality.

But... why wouldn't you apply the service packs, other than just to be stubborn? It seems like a bad idea - MS stopped offering security updates to SP1 users about a year ago, I do't even know how long it's been since SP0 was supported...

My computer was set up by my old company. Windows update does not work because it tries to look for a SUS which doesn't exist. However I have no problems with it and apply fixes only if i need to.

then just in case:

net stop wuauserv

net start wuauserv

wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow

worst case scenario download SP3 redist and run it locally. :thumbup
