u can integrate over xpsp2 disk.....but i prefer integrate over a gold xp ....

Any particular reason?

Could I use a VLK key with such a version? SP3 slipstreams and installs fine on my current SP2 version, but will it allow me to use it on a pre-SP1/2 version?

You have 3 or more different versions of Windows Pro m8:

OEM

Retail

Corp

Each one actually only recognizes the keys for its version.

Now say you have a VLK or "Corp" key you will have to have a corp Gold disk to use a clean disk.

With sp1 and sp2 integrated you will loose some disk space thats why you should integrate ove a gold disk.

Actually, if you do it right, the SP2 with SP3 integrated, makes for a smaller image than integrating to a XP Gold source.

SP0 with SP3 is 561mb

SP2 with SP3 cleaned up and dotnetfx folder removed (to show comparision against SP0 since SP0 does not have DOTNETFX folder)

Is 548mb

If you choose to leave DOTNETFX folder (and copy DOTNETFX to the SP0 integrated image) Then the file sizes will be:

SP0 source: 600mb

SP2 source: 587mb

Care to elaborate on what you mean by 'do it right'?

Will using nLite do it 'right'?

Nlite will "integrate" it properly, but will not clean up the duplicate files. If you have a SP2 disk this is the way to clean it up. Doing this is also very useful if you wish to make custom modified images.

-edit: Forgot to mention this: Copy/extract your sp2 image to a folder named "finished" on your HD, then copy sp3 installer to a folder called "sp3" and rename the intaller to "sp3.exe"

To make this method much faster, create a new text file and name it cleanup.txt and add the following in quotes. Then rename it to cleanup.bat and launch.

(note, you must edit the directories to point to your actual drive/folder directories. This script will also integrate so you won't need nlite)

e:\sp3\sp3.exe /integrate:e:\finished

rmdir /s /q e:\finished\cmpnents

del /q /f e:\finished\WIN51IP.SP2

del /q /f e:\finished\i386\PLUGIN.OC_

del /q /f e:\finished\i386\SP2.CAB

del /q /f e:\finished\i386\SP2.CAT

del /q /f e:\finished\i386\ASMS\70\POLICY\MSFT\MSWINCRT\MSWINCRT.CA_

del /q /f e:\finished\i386\ASMS\70\MSFT\WINDOWS\MSWINCRT\MSVCIRT.DL_

del /q /f e:\finished\i386\ASMS\70\MSFT\WINDOWS\MSWINCRT\MSVCRT.DL_

del /q /f e:\finished\i386\ASMS\70\MSFT\WINDOWS\MSWINCRT\MSWINCRT.CA_

del /q /f e:\finished\i386\ASMS\60\POLICY\60\COMCTL\COMCTL.CA_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\60\MSFT\WINDOWS\COMMON\CONTROLS\COMCTL32.DL_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\60\MSFT\WINDOWS\COMMON\CONTROLS\CONTROLS.CA_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\52\POLICY\MSFT\WINDOWS\NETWORKING\RTCDLL\RTCDLL.CA_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\52\POLICY\MSFT\WINDOWS\NETWORKING\DXMRTP\DXMRTP.CA_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\52\MSFT\WINDOWS\NET\RTCRES\RTCRES.CA_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\52\MSFT\WINDOWS\NET\RTCRES\RTCRES.DL_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\52\MSFT\WINDOWS\NET\RTCDLL\RTCDLL.CA_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\52\MSFT\WINDOWS\NET\RTCDLL\RTCDLL.DL_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\52\MSFT\WINDOWS\NET\DXMRTP\DXMRTP.CA_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\52\MSFT\WINDOWS\NET\DXMRTP\DXMRTP.DL_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\2\DEFAULT\DEFAULT.CA_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\10\POLICY\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS\GDIPLUS.CA_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\10\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS\GDIPLUS.CA_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\10\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS\GDIPLUS.DL_

del /q /f e:\finished\I386\ASMS\1\DEFAULT\DEFAULT.CA_

Next, use what ever program you like to make a cd and don't forget to add the bootable information.

OK here are my findings:

XP Gold iso size = 492 megs

XP SP1a iso size = 507 megs

XP SP2 iso size = 582 megs

XP SP1a + SP2 iso size = 594 megs

XP SP1a + SP2 + SP3 iso size = 624 megs

XP SP3 iso size = 593 megs

Total wasted space with all 3 packs? = 31 megs

Why are you deleting the asms files?

Total size gain from XP gold to SP3 = 101 megs

Those files get deleted because on integration of sp3 to a sp2 source, the "NEW" files are full extension names. For example, after integration, the folder \finished\i386\ASMS\70\POLICY\MSFT\MSWINCRT\ will contain MSWINCRT.CA_ (sp2 source) and the new file MSWINCRT.CAT

Same goes for the .dl_ files that become .dll for the new files, same with .ca_ for .cab and .cat, etc

All those files get deleted because now they are outdated and are not used.

Feel free to try the script and run the new integrated image in v.m.
