Alternate Defragment Tool for Win98 SE

Recommended Posts

Is there an alternate defragment program for Windows 98 SE? I really don't want to use the one provided because its rather slow at what it does.

It is well known that if you can get your hand on the WinME defrag.exe, it's far quicker.

Wow. Thanks. I hope it works without any problems. If, by any chance, it doesn't work, is there any other program I can use?

Diskeeper is probably the best defragmentation tool available. Version 9 was the last version to work on 98SE.

Hello:

Diskeeper Lite 7.0 was the last freeware version to support Win 98/ME and is available for download at:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207 .

The only problems are that it's nag-ware, with a nag screen at start-up to buy the full version, and that it will replace the MS Defragmenter as the default defragmenter utility in the registry. But it does seem to work quite well.

O.J.

Hello Again:

I also meant to mention a freeware utility called "ScanDefrag" available for free download at:

http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/ .

This utility will use the MS Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, and Defragmenter utilities that come bundles with Win 98/ME. But what is does is have you reboot the system and then it run these utilities before the system fully boots into normal Windows mode. This eliminates all of the stopping and re-starting that occurs when MS Scandisk and Defragmenter are run in Windows normal mode, and I found that it even works better than running these utilities in Windows safe mode.

HTH,

O.J.

The WinME defrag.exe file should be able to run under Win98se. I've used it many times and it's great. Defrags FAT32 file systems a lot faster than the 98se version.

The regular edition of diskeeper is not freeware, though.

I did have some memories using Diskeeper Lite v7 on Win98/ME computers

um, there is a Diskeeper Lite 9 bundled with the Intel Desktop Utilities software package. v9 seems to remove those nag-screens. go here:

http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/softw...du/download.htm

Download Intel Desktop Utilities version 2.1.9.66 (an 89meg size download) which features DK Lite 9 and some other tools.

Also see this page on different defrag tools:

Downloaded and extracted Diskeeper. Clicked on the install .exe. After about 20 seconds replied with an error message about incompatible OS. Also the Readme says it's for XP not win98SE :-(

Quite old post (10 years) but for other readers and ppl searching for Windows 9x solutions.

It did not like my machine either in 2018, it was complaining on some sort of setup DCOM thing, then it did a rollback.

The solution to this where (in my case) when the requester pops up, go to :\Program Files\Executive Software (and do not close the requester)
and in the diskkeeper lite dir run immc.exe (which installs some MS managament console) Then run DKService.exe (I do not know if it is important, I did it though)...
Then Terminate the installer process so it can't do a rollback (I used process explorer from sysinternals v8.35), then try launch the DKlite.msc

That worked for me and diskkeeper lite told me it succeded to defragment the drive (C:\) where MS Defrag and NU SD32 had failed (restarting)...

I also removed the process DKService.exe and tried to launch the DKlite.msc and it worked, so it might not be neccessary to run DKService.exe at all...

//Added
There is a "way" to get "rid" of the "upgrade and order" DKLite without "real" hacking...

When you have tried DKLite a few times and you know you should order it, then you can go to DKLite installation folder then go into the HTML folder and open the orientation.htm file, inside it in the HEAD tag you will find a SCRIPT tag with two functions, UPGRADE and URL, after the URL function (or wherever inside the script tag, I guess )  you could simply add

window.status='DkLiteQuit'

Then the window will close directly after it is opened.
