What's the deal with XP-SP3 ???

The deal is that SP3 will be the third service pack for Microsoft Windows XP. Microsoft has done a great job keeping this operating systems up-to-date with frequent service packs, as it has only been 3.5+ years since the last service pack was released!

(Sarcasm directed at Microsoft, not "98 Guy")

Is a non-beta version available yet? If not - when?

I'm assuming you mean a public release, which has been scheduled for "the first half of 2008"-- but based on the current forecast, most are predicting that it will be out sometime next month (April).

I'm glad at least it's still in the works. I always preferred SP1 for it's speed; if you knew how to keep your computer secure, you never needed it, but MS doesn't provide patches anymore, right?

I have no problem running SP2 at the moment, but I'm itching to get SP3 so I don't have to reformat my newly created computers so quickly after having installed it (because god knows installing a service pack is asking for trouble - always slipstream ;)). SP2 + RyanVM Update Pack = bliss.

I tried out SP3 in a virtual machine and wasn't too impressed. It really seems like just all MS's current updates rolled into one package, big whoop. MS turned evil as soon as they started pushing Vista on ALL computers (even the pieces of "crap" with 512mb RAM) so there's no way they can do anything useful anymore. I'm sticking with XP til the bitter end (even, yes, on my shiny new Core 2 Duo system), because Vista is just such s***e, but it's all MS will ever push now.

Honestly, I can't believe Vista is rolling along in the market right now so much better than WinME. Vista is much worse than ME ever was. Somehow it's actually gaining ground. Hopefully it'll end up dying just like ME though... =\

Yeah, I understand every company has to make money. But this has gone too far. Change just for the sake of change. Facelift. They could at least provide something useful.

And Office too. Every version of Office after 97 introduced thousand of items nobody ever uses.

Microsoft - Give something useful! At least charge us for service packs of products that work good and leave us alone.

Most of it's sales are probably either non-technical users or oem sales. They have to be fudging the numbers somewhere. :rolleyes:

I miss ME, actually. With the DOS patch it was pretty decent. It could be pretty stable if you didn't constantly install new software that caused dll hell, according to certain slashdot users.

ME was actually more stable on my Palmax PD1000 mininotebook (one of the first UMPCs of yesteryear), than the preinstalled Win98. It gave me precisely 1 BSOD every time it started up (which I was too n00b to troubleshoot at the time I owned it) but after that, it was rock solid, at least as solid as Win9x can be. I never did understand the hype regarding only ME being terrible, but I class it all as "windows 9x in general sucked". Granted, NT-based systems use a lot more memory...

Anyway, I don't really know about Vista sales. I've noticed a strange phenomenon online that can only be described as night and day. Online, there seem to be a LARGE number of people that swear by Vista and say there's nothing at all wrong with it, that my computer just sucks, etc etc etc... whereas offline, in the "real world", there's not a single person that can say anything good about Vista - in fact, many people I talk to say they won't buy a new computer because they all include Vista (even if it can be removed). There are quite few people online that actually voice up about Vista's failure. Unfortunately, the internet is where communication occurs... so if nobody's dissing Vista online... Vista proliferates and XP dies. :(

Will it be rolled / stamped into the OEM/VAR System Builder CD before Jan / 2009?

I found this info here:

I like XP myself better than VISTA which is noticeably slower, dual booting with XP on this Dell E520, 1.5ghz cpu, 1.5 Ggb ram, and my Win 98 on a 650mhx cpu w/ 320mb ram boots and opens folders faster than it. But i do not miss the 9x freeze ups!

Let me be the first to say it then, Vista is awful in every imaginable way. Perhaps it's similar in a way to the transition to XP, in that a 98/nt/me class/era machine couldn't run well with XP installed on it. Even XP doesn't run well with 512 MB of RAM.

I've seen whole offices of Dell machines with 256 MB, and it's just mind boggling how people can stand to use it.

I have only 1.5GB ram on this Dell e520, and Vista basic lags. On boot up, while you get the Desktop in view after about 40 sec. (from when Vista is chosen as the OS), it take almost 2 minutes before you can open something like System Properties (Windows key and Pause/Break) without it hanging for almost 12 seconds. With XP this is much faster on the same PC. i actually went from a PC with a AMD 650mhz cpu and 320 ram running W/98se to this brand new PC, but found that the old PC is faster in booting to a fully usable state, and basic tasks like opening folders. (i can easily lists it's shortcomings too!) But in defense of Vista, it is more stable than XP, Power management works better, and Disk management enables you to do more than XP Home edition. It also has Speech to Text capability (not just the opposite), though it only seems to work in Wordpad, and also can enable you to navigate and open programs. This capability BTW, is still in it's infancy but should see more development as a viable feature. Or so i pray, as my fingers are stiffer as i get older.
