Sigma Tel Driver Blocking Vista SP1 Update

I had not noticed the correction you made to replace wrt_d8-4.ini from the AUD_allVista_5713.1 file with the one from a R173209 5713.1 file. So i found the R173209.exe file and used that WRT_D8-4.INI file to replaced the one in the v6.10.5713.1 WDM folder.

The IDI drivers were uninstalled and i rebooted, and then i used DM to uninstall the generic Vista HD audio drivers (6.0.6000.16386) as directed, and w/out restarting the computer i ran run the setup.exe program again from the 5713.1 folder with the modified stwrt.ini file. After a reboot the driver version was 6.10.5713.1, but again no audio, and SP1 will not get past the license dialog box.

The revised KB938371 was included in the latest WU updates today, and KB949939 says "This update does not apply to your system."

I moved my audio back to ver. 6.10.0.5515. I think i just need to do a clean install with DVD SP1 slip streamed. Perhaps there is another driver that is not on the SP1 forbidden list.

hmm, it looks like you have a complex situation with the SP1 install, PeaceByJesus.

i'm scratching my head on this one but we'll try to work things out.

I guess the 6.10.5713.1 of the IDT audio drivers were pretty much a "bonus" and not necessary for your computer but at least v6.10.5515 worked. Are you absolutely sure your hardware ID no is "FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DD"? double-check again in Device Manager, expand the Sound, video & game controllers section, double-click on the Sigmatel/IDT High Definition Audio Codec, choose properties, click on Details tab and change the Property value from Device Description to Hardware IDs. We might be off a letter or two. for example, the "SUBSYS_102801DD" part might be "SUBSYS_102801DC" or "SUBSYS_102801DB"

So let's stick with build 5515 for now since they're fit for Vista SP1. We'll use the 5713.1 drivers some other time once we resolve the SP1 install problem. I suspect they're might be some antivirus and/or security programs running that might be intefering with SP1 setup. does SP1 setup crash after the license dialog box? What error messages appear when you ran SP1 setup?

If you have antivirus software installed what kind is it? Also check if your have firewall software installed on your machine. I think we need to disable antivirus, anti-spyware and firewall programs before setting up Vista SP1 as these programs may interfere with the SP1 installation. I happen to read the Vista SP1 troubleshooting page here:

http://www.winvistaclub.com/t67.html

And try to follow the suggestions in MS KB article 947366 (especially Resolution No. 5):

http://support.microsoft.com/Kb/947366

perhaps you may want to list all the software you have installed on your Dell E520 machine here.

I think we also need to update the ks.sys file. A flaw in the ks.sys file might be causing install problems with SP1. Let's download the KB950127 update here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en

also, what kind of display adapter your Dell E520 machine is using? Open Device Manager and Expand the Display adapters section.

OK, for review, there is no error message when i attempt to run SP1, but as i stated in my first post (pg. 1), "

I have downloaded the stand alone SP1 file twice and from windows update once [twice], but when i run it the license dialog box comes up and the text goes past the margins (you cannot expand the box) and you cannot scroll sideways [only up and down], nor is there any "I Agree box" at the end. Changing Screen resolutions do not help. The text ends with "EULAID:VistaSP1_R1.0_Upgrade_RTL_en-US." NEXT is not available to click. (see image here] This happens even in Safe Mode, and with all audio drivers deleted (recycle bin) and disabled in the BIOS. [and changed display settings] And even after disconnecting the drive with XP on it (dual boot) [and the DVD external enclosure unplugged]. I cannot remove the sound card as it is part of the mobo.I have no other offending drivers according to the MS list, or strange hardware, and all other available needed updates from Dell or MS are installed."

As for the Hardware lds, i simply copied and pasted it last time, and here it is again: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DD&REV_1002

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DD

It lines up with yours FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DD

There is no antivir running, and turning Windows firewall off makes no difference for SP1. And i tried it in safe made. And followed MS tech supports attempts (mem. diag., SFC, etc.). The best we could do was getting WU to list SP1 for my PC, but it will not install.

The Display is the Intel G965 which is on Windows hit list for "Igdkmd32.sys – versions between and including driver 7.14.10.1322 and 7.14.10.1403z", but i updated it to version 7.14.10.1437 a while ago using a workaround.

As for other hardware, I have sent you a message with pertinent specs.

I downloaded and ran the KB950127 but the SP1 install does the same.

Thanks again for your efforts, though it is not critical. I am content to wait till the Vista/Sp1 DVD gets here if you want. This could use a good clean install. And i also have XP (retail, a good buy, thank God). I plan to back up my whole C (Vista) drive (except the page and hiber.sys files) to an external drive first just in case i need things. I would direct the new install to there for drivers

Another report someone got from MS support was

"Action Plan:

Kindly wait for further updates from microsoft which addresses the sigma

audio driver compatibilty issues with service pack1."

wow, PeaceByJesus. I'm baffled as to why the Next button in the SP1 license agreement box is grayed out (disabled) in the picture you showed me. this shouldn't happen unless there's a program that is interfering with it.

I think we can end the discussion here. I don't think the v6.10.5515 of the Sigmatel/IDT audio drivers are causing this problem, so we can rule out that possibility. I guess we'll have to wait for the Vista SP1 DVD. you may have a better chance with that one. Before installing SP1 from WU, Download center or from the DVD, turn off user account control [uAC] as described here:

http://windows.about.com/od/windowsvistase.../uac_popups.htm

If you need any more help, you can contact me by clicking on my username "erpdude8" on the left hand side of this forum page and you can send me either email or PM message.

thanks for the workaround to install the generic Intel 945/965 graphics drivers. I couldn't apply them on my mom's Dell Inspiron laptop the previous several times and the setup program told me to obtain the Intel drivers from the computer manufacturer. Looks like I really had to un-install the customized Intel video drivers first and then install the new generic ones. now I got them (now shows 7.14.10.1437) to work on the laptop.

Right on. I can post back after Vista/Sp1 arrives. As for UAC, that has been turned off a long time ago (only got 1 virus in 7 years of extensive web use. Thank God) .

Glad the Intel 945/965 workaround was a help

Thanks again for your work on MSFN. If you need a job recommendation you should get plenty.

yea, someday. though I won't be working for Dell. Dell's headquarters are in Texas. I reside in southern California.

Judging by the picture you posted, the Vista SP1 setup dialog box is missing a checkbox that says "Accept License Agreement". the checkbox should be shown at the bottom of the license agreement box.

Since changing the screen resolutions didn't work, i'm beginning to think the text styles (aka. fonts) you are using are what's causing the SP1 setup dialog box to display strangely and not show the License agreement checkbox. To fix this problem, right click on an open area of your Desktop, select Personalize, click on Theme, change the Theme to "Windows Vista" and click OK to make changes.

unfortunately your customized font settings, color and wallpaper settings may be lost when doing this so before you actually do the tip described above, click on the "Save As" button on the Theme Settings dialog box to save your current theme (name the theme whatever you want) and click OK. after you save your customized theme, do the procedure mentioned above to change the Desktop theme to Windows Vista.

Changing the Desktop Theme to Windows Vista will use the "Segoe UI" fonts for the menu bar, message box and title bars for the windows. Now try running Vista SP1 setup again if the "Accept License Agreement" checkbox appears at the bottom, click on it and the "Next" button will be available for you to click on.

then after SP1 is installed you can change back to your current desktop theme by right clicking on an open area of your Desktop, select Personalize, click on Theme and change the Theme back to your current one you saved.

PeaceByJesus,

Here's the screenshot from Paul Thurrott's Supersite on the Vista SP1 license agreement dialog box:

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvi...a_sp1_wu_07.jpg

Notice in this picture, a checkbox that says "I accept the license terms" is there. If you check this box, the "Next" button will no longer be grayed out and you can click on it.

So it turns out to be the "fonts" problem that made the SP1 license agreement window not show the checkbox to accept the license terms on your computer. All you need to do is change the fonts back to Segoe UI (which is the default or preset for Vista) and the SP1 setup window should work as expected.

Ok, for all other Vista users having Sigmatel/IDT audio driver problems and not getting Vista SP1, please post here and mention the model no. or hardware ID no. of the Sigmatel audio device.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I have been to personalization many times before, as Windows forgets some previous color settings if you change one and i do customize. I changed the Desktop Theme back to Windows Vista, and under Advanced ... Segoe UI was not listed under the fonts for Menu, etc. In fact the font name was blank for these. Nor did the drop down menu list a lot of fonts that were in the Font folder. But i had a little freeware app called Font Loader i had gotten to install some extra fonts before that were not loading in my Word pro, and it puts a right click option on the Font folder to Load Fonts. I choose that and it warned me about loading system fonts, which of course i ignored, and it loaded about 145 as i recall. I went back to Personalization and there was Segoe UI. Went back to try the SP1 again and behold, now i can accept the Windows license and proceed! May God bless that diligent tech guy named erpdude. There is a place up in Richmond WA that could use you And i am going to tell them that. Or at least the support guy who came up empty (at least they should use something like Arial for dialog boxes). I had posted this problem on Dell forums and will post your solution and link here. Why that font and others were not loading i know not. I had that problem under W/9x and that is why i got a font loader. I appreciate freeware too.

Thanks again for your over the top unsolicited degree of pursuit of this. 5 stars

Resolution

If some or all of them are already listed, do not list them again.

The procedure of editing the stwrt.ini & stwrt64.ini files from the v6.10.5713.1 sigmatel/idt audio drivers from intel is optional if you already have Vista SP1 compatible drivers. It's a "last ditch" effort to get these drivers to work when you can't find any Vista SP1 compatible drivers that work specifically for your computer.

Looks like PeaceByJesus isn't alone with the SP1 setup problem he encountered. Good thing I bookmarked this Microsoft forum topic:

http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPo...3&SiteID=17

and check out the pictures on Installing Vista SP1 here:

http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=648

When running SP1 setup and you reach the license agreement part, there should be an option telling you to accept the license terms. Select that option and you can click on the Next button to continue on with SP1 setup.

Ps. I found that the problem was not with the Theme, as i changed it back and choose Comic sans for all the menus, etc. and the SP1 box and the I accept.. box is fine now Some how Windows system fonts were not loading. This was noticeable in Safe Mode as dialog box fonts, etc. were very small.

I have to wait till i backup everything today and i will try to install the sp1 the way it i and see what happens

I deleted and added the line to the stwrt.INI as instructed, and installed that driver and rebooted to no audio. I then installed SP1 in about 40 minutes and then installed a 6.10.0.5515 Sigmatel driver, and all works fine, praise the Lord!

Windows Personalization also has a few other quirks, in which I was able to reproduce the no Segoeui font problem. If the Vista theme is selected, but you change colors and fonts of items under Colors and Appearance>Advanced, it will change the theme to "Modified theme" from Windows Vista (as listed under Themes), but many of of the new colors settings that are selected and applied do not show up (3d objects, Tool tips etc,, are still the default color). And upon reboot you lose a lot of fonts including Segoeui (they are not offered under Advanced). If i change back to Windows Vista theme and boot then i do not recover them. Only if i use my FontLoader can i get them back.

An additional quirk is that if you change Items beyond 3d objects (like Active title bar etc.) and later change 3d objects then it will change some of the other Items to the color of the 3d object. When i first set up my OS preferences i notice this. No big deal but for Sp1 there apparently is a price to pay for changing the MS defaults.

Well, this has actually been like a break for me, but now i need to get back to work. Thanks again for your help.

no probs, PeaceByJesus. It's as if the Lord told me (in my sleep a few days ago) to tell you to change the fonts on your Vista computer and then run SP1 setup to see if your situation got better. there you have it. There's no need to use the modified stwrt.ini trick anymore as you already have compatible Vista SP1 sigmatel hd audio drivers. It was a last ditch effort anyway.

I have searched the Windows Update and Microsoft Update Catalog sites and found no updated Sigmatel HD audio drivers compatible with Vista SP1. Latest drivers I found at those two sites are 6.10.0.5462. So for those using Sigmatel HD audio, they will need to obtain the latest drivers from computer manufacturers such as Dell or Gateway (or Intel), rather than rely on Windows Update to provide updated Sigmatel HD audio drivers.

To summarize, for those using Gateway P-6831FX laptop or Gateway machines with PM965 motherboards, get v6.10.0.5713.0 of the Sigmatel/IDT HD Audio drivers here.

For some Dell laptop computers, try the R171788.exe or R170217.EXE packages. Both have v6.10.0.5614 of the Sigmatel HD sound drivers.

for some Dell laptops that use Sigmatel HD Audio with Array Mics, use the R167846.exe file which has Sigmatel sound drivers version 6.10.0.5609.

For some Dell desktop machines, try the R173209.exe package which has 6.10.0.5515 of the audio drivers.

And for computers using certain Intel motherboards with built-in Sigmatel/IDT 92xx HD audio chips, try the IDT 92XX Audio v6.10.0.5713.1 drivers from here.

Pretty soon, perhaps this Friday afternoon of April 18 pacific time, Vista SP1 will be available through Automatic Updates. that means Vista users will receive Vista SP1 automatically with Automatic Updates enabled, regardless of the Sigmatel high definition sound driver situation.

AND if after installing Vista Service Pack 1 by any method causes the sound problems (or sound loss), check out the solutions found in MS support KB article 948481.

Hope Vista users find these recent information useful.

Good to your concise closure. You are not the first person the Lord "spoke" to in their sleep!

SP1 is running fine with no discernible difference. Still lags behind XP, but it has it's strengths.

Hope this thread helps others. Maybe see you when i have another prob.

thanks. I will say that Microsoft has finally posted updated Sigmatel/IDT HD Audio drivers at Windows Update and at the Microsoft Update Catalog site for Vista SP1. The packages are listed as "IDT - Audio - IDT High Definition Audio Codec" for Windows Vista version 1.0.5713.6 dated 2/13/2008. I recently did a search of them at the Microsoft Update Catalog site:

http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/sit...spx?q=idt+audio

[you need to use Internet Explorer to correctly view this page as this site does not work with non-IE browsers]

AND Microsoft has updated MS support KB article 948343 on May 5, 2008 to reflect the following on Sigmatel/IDT HD audio:

IDT/SigmaTel

• For x86-based computers: Sthda.cat - published 12/17/07 or earlier

• For x64-based computers: Sthda64.cat - published 12/17/07 or earlier

IDT/SigmaTel

• For x86-based computers: Stwrt.cat - published 12/17/07 or earlier

• For x64-based computers: Stwrt64.cat - published 12/17/07 or earlier

Exceptions for IDT/SigmaTel drivers were made on certain models of Dell, HP, and Sony computers because these drivers were updated to address this issue before the 12/17/07 publish date.

I think MS has already modified their Windows Update "filters" to allow Vista users to obtain SP1 through WU when using certain IDT/Sigmatel audio drivers on Dell, HP and Sony machines.
