Missing component? Volume Shadow Copy error

BadCam

Recommended Posts

My vLite install seems to be going well on my Kohjinsha SH8. However I get the following error when I try to backup my fresh install using DriveimageXML:

Could not initialise Windows Volume Shadow service (VSS) Code: error 80000FFFF

Make sure VSSVC.exe is running in your task mangager.

Click help for more information.

Clicking OK gives me the following additional error:

Warning: Volume could not be properly locked. You can still continue but the backup image may be damaged.

I would continue but I fear the backup WILL be damaged.

I assume that I have taken out one component too many. Your thoughts please.

You removed the Volume Shadow Copy Feature with vLite, thats wgat the error message says. You must create a new DVD and keep it.

No MagicAndre1981.

I have not disabled the Volume Shadow Copy feature. Certainly, not knowingly. So what do you need that I can post here that will allow you to see what I'm missing?

I've just tried a relatively full vLite install. I selected all of the compatibility applications of which the only one that I can see that has the shadow copy feature is System Restore.

Of the components which I can select to be removed, I know of none that would have affected Show copy. I'm still getting the same error.

How can I give you a list of those that I've chosen to remove or retain?

Thanks.

it doesnt have to be a vlite problem

looks like driveimage answered your own question to me. did you check to see if the required service is running.

type services.msc in run box

It is not possible to backup open files in Windows XP/2003 without this service running, and you never know when backup software, or CD/DVD Writing software, might need to have this service running.

An update:

I've tried to remove less components than previously. These are the items that I've left in the vLite setup and one (or more) of these items seems to be critical in order for Volume shadow copy & DriveIMageXML to work. I'd like to know which of these items I can remove and which I need to retain in order to keep WSC working:

Windows Sidebar & Gadgets

Dynamic Volume manager

iSCSI

Distributed link tracking client

IPSEC policy agent

Microsoft DFS Replication

Readyboost

Windows remote management

Secondary login

I'm guessing it must be Dymanic Volume Manager. Please advise. Thanks. Once I've removed the excess, I think I'm going to have a very nice vLite Vista install :thumbup

Well I would guess Dynamic Volume manager as well, but it is not really clear if you said that when kept it worked.

I have saved this report for checking, let me know if you confirm that it is Dynamic Volume manager.

Sorry?

I'll try to be clearer for you.

These components were NOT in my initial Lastsession.ini Now they are. What I'll do then is remove all of these components one by one until I find out what's preventing the Shadow Copy Service from working.

I was hoping someone here might actually know so that it would save me the work. I'm looking at quite a lot of re-installs here I'm guessing.

Already testing, n looking for ya lol :)

You Need Task Schdeculer, and System Restore , it also says in components option ... but i have a question how can it be it says that, that should even be possible if you are boot in to WinPE or some ind og boot enviroment.. you are for god sake not "ghosting" while you are IN the windows ..anyway .. is it a fresh Install you have make since you are making a ghost .. then you could make a WIM image instead and put it in your Vista DVD or that would say, you make a copy of the original and then put the package WIM image in instead of the Original, the you would have a copy almost like your ghost the diffrence is you could manage it after in f.exaple vlite etc.

I'm sorry but I didn't understand a word of what you just said. Are you querying the reason as to why I want to use DriveimageXML? What's a WIM image? f.axaple?

What I need to be able to do is backup my laptop. I don't fancy going through a complete re-install of Vista, followed by re-installing all of my favourite programmes and setting up my system to exactly how I want it, and THEN find out that I can't back it up (using DriveimageXML) because I'm missing an important component.

Thanks LegoLiam

I think it's the distributed link tracking client and dynamic volume manager. My vLite and DriveimageXML work fine together with those two retained in the vLite install. It will interesting to see what you come up with.
