New DVD Burner

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, Its me again :(

Anyways,

I need a new dvd burner, mine hardly opens sometimes i have to manually eject just to put a darn CD in it.

So its time for a new one for sure.

I just wanna know what you guys think about the Sata dvd burners? are they any good?

I found this one: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...&CatId=1624

Just curious, why are sata becoming cheaper than IDE? I thought sata is a better technology than IDE ?

Well thank you guys!

My $0.02:

When I bought my first mainboard with integrated SATA controller, I wanted to go all-SATA and bought one of the first SATA DVD burners to replace my 2.4x LiteOn (my first Plextor drive, http://www.plextor.com/english/products/Archive/712A.htm), thinking it'd be somewhat future-proof...

Windows XP did NOT like installing from SATA. Also, many utilities (especially bootable CDs) didn't work from SATA.

Finally installed a spare IDE drive.

I'm not sure about Vista, or maybe even XP (SP3), but SATA optical drives with XP (RTM to SP2) are problematic and should probably be avoided.

Or, at least, be aware of possible problems.

Lastly, remember that IDE won't be out of the picture anytime soon, and probably not before even your *NEW* drive has reached end-of-life (as mine did).

That being said, that drive looks nice. (IMHO, since DVD-R version 2.1 spec. media became available (up to 16x), ALL media and burners are sooooo much more reliable!)

Good Luck and Happy New Year!

Just because you've had issues with your drive / system does not make that the case for everyone. First of all IDE is dead and anything IDE related is dying. Most new motherboards only have a single IDE port and some don't have any (which will be more and more the case).

I have FOUR SATA Pioneer DVR-212D DVD+/-RW drives. I have installed Windows XP, Vista and Linux using those drives. I rip using ALL four drives simultaneously and I burn using ALL four drives simultaneously without any buffer underruns and/or errors.

There are factors that come into play, it's not just because it doesn't work on your combination of hardware that it means that it doesn't work for anyone. I encourage you to share your information in this thread however : http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=110235

Thanks, yeah agreed, IDE is dying my mobo only came with one IDE controller and they put it in a spot where it is a pain in the neck :P But i have one sata port left, the rest our filled with HDDs and my dvd burner is like starting to go or something, i mean i burn tons of DVD's on it so i don't want a cheap one :D

But if anyone thinks i should go with Sata or IDE, I dont mind going with either one, I just figured sata would be faster :D

Edit:

Maybe i should go with this one?

Just a thought :D

Speed does not depend on whether it's SATA or IDE. The speed is dependent on what the drive is rated at - whether it's 6x, 8x, etc. So, a SATA 6x equals IDE 6x.

The advantage of SATA is the aerodynamics with the slim cable. Less clutter.

I prefer SATA over IDE.

I, also, haven't had issues installing XP using SATA. I have a Samsung.

Not to be picky, ;) but the "real" name for IDE is ATA:

http://ata-atapi.com/hist.htm

and there were reports of "early" hardware being actually a bit "flaky":

http://ata-atapi.com/sata.htm

Current SATA II hardware appears to be rather reliable, though the driver problems, expecially on certain INTEL chipset motherboards are re-known.

Also, real life tests, such as this one:

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Sp...ArticleId=16014

show how speed of SATA and SATA II drives has been hyped by manufacturers and that claimed speed is usually far from reality.

Check the Storage Review test results, to have an idea of the difference in speed you can expect from actual HD models:

http://www.storagereview.com/Testbed4Compare.sr

SATA for optical media drives does not seem, in my opinion, to give any advantage over ATA, as even old ATA bus transfer rate is faster than actual drive speed.

The sheer fact that we have now an "OFFICIAL SATA DVD compatibility" thread does ring any bell?

For your system SATA, I have the LiteON by the way... Average number of DVDs it can burn when not older then 6 months is a little over 1700. You would not believe how many pirated stuff is sold in Mexico ;).
