Modifing the send to menu:

  1. Open My computer, in the address bar type "shell:sendto" (without the commas and type it exactly), this will open the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\SendTo" quickly.
  2. Right click on an empty space, from new choose shortcut.
  3. Create a new shortcut wizard will appear, browse to the folder you want it to appear in the send to menu, click next, type a name for the shortcut then click finish.
  4. You can also remove the shortcuts you don't want it in the send to menu just by deleting it in this folder.

Hide all the items on the desktop:

  1. Right click on an emply space on the desktop, choose Arrange icons by, then uncheck show desktop icons.
  2. This will hide all the icons on the desktop including the recycle bin, Note that you can't add a shortcut to the desktop with this option unchecked, to restore the icons, repeat the first step and check the option.

The SendTo menu is known to be a resource hogger. When removed, loading speed of a context-menu is severely improved.

Windows likes to stuff all sorts of entries into that 'send to' folder.

Cleaning out all the stuff you don't want or will never use, in there, can't hurt either.

To really get Winders runnin' right, fast and efficient, requires just all sorts of little things like that.

M$ just put way too much 'crapola' into its default ver. of Winders.

And OH, the Services! There are things in there that many folks would never use in a lifetime.

After much cleaning and tweaking, I can improve Winders performance considerably.

This has been a very interesting thread. I hope it will continue to grow.

Cheers!

Better way to set the default folder view for all folders (undocumented, it seems). Note that I've seen these work on XP, 2003, and Vista/2008, but not on 2000 as I have no more 2000 boxes to play with and don't care to build a VM just to test this :).

These settings are per-user only, and configuring the following registry values in a user's profile will set the default view for newly created folders (in this example, the default will be the "detail" view):

Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell
Value: WFlags
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0

Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell
Value: Status
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0

Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell
Value: Mode
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 4

Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell
Value: vid
Type: REG_SZ
Data: {137E7700-3573-11CF-AE69-08002B2E1262}

Key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags\AllFolders\Shell
Value: WFlags
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0

Key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags\AllFolders\Shell
Value: Status
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0

Key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags\AllFolders\Shell
Value: Mode
Type: REG_DWORD

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags\AllFolders\Shell
Value: vid
Type: REG_SZ
Data: {137E7700-3573-11CF-AE69-08002B2E1262}

Here are all of the possible “mode” and “vid” values that can be set:
Name Mode VID
Icons 1 {0057D0E0-3573-11CF-AE69-08002B2E1262}
List 3 {0E1FA5E0-3573-11CF-AE69-08002B2E1262}
Details 4 {137E7700-3573-11CF-AE69-08002B2E1262}
Thumbnail 5 {8BEBB290-52D0-11D0-B7F4-00C04FD706EC}
Tiles 6 {65F125E5-7BE1-4810-BA9D-D271C8432CE3}
Filmstrip 7 {8EEFA624-D1E9-445B-94B7-74FBCE2EA11A}

Delete the following reg keys to get rid of currently stored data, so that these folders also get the above settings:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU

Kinda new at this, so sorry if I missed this. I found a tweak for Vista that added "Copy to folder...." and "move to folder....." to the right click menu.

Would like to do this to XP. Anyone know if it's possible?

Also, kinda stumbled upon to vista tweak, cant remember what it was lol

if anyone knows the vista one off hand, too, that'd be awesome. If not, i'll find it again, no doubt

Thanks

Cyborg_Dell's Suggestions:

//How To : Add Custom Folder to My Computer or the Desktop

Create the following series of keys and values in the registry at [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID] or [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesCLSID]. The GUID, globally unique identifier, can be a random number, in this example "FD4DF9E0-E3DE-11CE-BFCF-ABCD1DE12345" is used. See this article for more GUID examples.

How to add custom folder to Start Menu?

Here is another very simple tweak to adjust the size of all the desktop icons at once:

Hold down the CTRL key while scrolling (up/down) with your mouse wheel (if ya have one). You will notice that all the icons going from small to large and large to small..depending on the direction of the wheel.

Simple and very handy.
