No wonder you're not getting any sound. IRQ 5 is being claimed by Intel SMBus Controller, you Ethernet card, and your sound card all at once.

I'd recommend leaving the sound card at IRQ 5 for DOS compatibility, and moving the network card to a free IRQ.

Enlighten me, how to fix the problem - I haven't done it before?

There're a few ways to acomplish this and which of these is available to you depends mainly on the way the card/drivers are designed:

1) Open the properties dialog for the network card in Device manager, go to the Resources page, uncheck the auto-config option, and try to change the settings there.

2) If you have the full driver package for the card, there should be a DOS utility (if you don't have it, get it from this page). Restart in DOS mode, start the utility and see if you can change the IRQ from there.

3a) Get in the BIOS setup, find the IRQ assignments menu (should be within the Advanced menu) and if the network card is listed there, try to change the IRQ.

3b) If there is no a direct setting for the card, try to disable the hardware you don't use (serial ports, paralel ports, etc.). This usually shifts/shuffles IRQs of the remaining hardware.

4) Move the card to another PCI slot.

If you've fully backed up your Windows folder, you could try to reinstall all drivers at once as explained here by Tihiy. This probablywould fix all your driver problems, but there is a small possibility something to go wrong. That's why you need the backup, if things become worse than now, just restore your system to the current state.

ok, Rainy, I think I understand what you are saying..

Can I change the ports to a specific range or number, and if, which & what??

I would prefer to do it manually, but Tiny's creation seem worth a try , if i can't figure it out.

But, I'm going to wait, until you or submix give me some confirmation on this..

Any ideas on the other minor issues i raised , (above) ??

ESS Audio - deleted everything...including DOS files

did clean re-install - but it re-entered DOS files and put a line in auto.exec & config.sys (which I promptly removed)

ESS Allegro - don't know the Chipset (is on the actual chip inside your PC) but here is a link -

and download the FIRST file, not the second (I suspect you have been using the second) and install it instead... worth a try.

edit - FWIW, may-be/appears-to-be the ESS1989/ESS1989s Chip (allegro-1) and (gulp!) could be a "combo" modem/sound card (god, they stink!)

Thx submix.. Yeah, I've been to both sites, to no avail.

I done clean re-installs.

I tried Add-Hardware (let windows find driver)

I've deleted thru Device Manager then let it re-install.

I tried Multimedia through Settings>Control Panel.

The proper control screen (imho) shows up, but it' 'greyed out'.

Same with Volume controls.

It says No Sound Device enabled, yet there seems to be no conflicts,

Device manager says: working correctly.

Like I said (above) during boot - it says "please Enable ESS Alegro, Game and Wdm through WIndows Applet - WTF?

Is it a port issue? since it appears that my network card and Allegro are on the same port 5??

I fixed all the other conflicts, so it's down to this.

Any other suggestions?

1 - this won't do it

2 - same here (both depend on the device being recognized and actively functional); so you now have a "sound" symbol in the Tray at the bottom?

3 - so you say there is no red-X on top of the "ESS Allegro" device (Sound, Video, and Game Controllers); actually says "This Device is working properly"... please list the Drivers, if you will...

4 - during boot ??? that confuses me...

5 - possible... you need to get one of those items onto a free IRQ, so go to

"Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Information", open "Hardware Resources", click on "IRQs" and list the contents. I will check on your network card to see what's "acceptable"; worst case if NIC fails accessing internet, you can set it back and be back online...

Please answer point-by-point to keep it clear...

edit BTW, I had an "oddball" combo modem/sound card (sux) and had to install the modem part before the sound part would kick in; wierd! So, if it comes down to it and you don't use the modem (only the NIC, ie DSL), then get a good sound card (they're cheap), and trash the combo POS. Not sure if that's the case - HP don't say much about it, but vase upon previous posts, I suspect this is the case.

Oh yeah, does it appear your Floppy is now working? (tried it yet?) May need it...

AND!!! one more thing - look on back of PC box; should be a tag/sticker/something and tell me the EXACT model number (front will only say generically 7585...); there are several versions of 7585...

but now it doesn't make a difference towards solving this.

I'm on DSL Ethernet LAN

The machine came with a modem which was used for about the first 6 months... it was a POS from PacBell

it's possible the modem needs to be there now?

There is an upgrade (diamond) modem driver on the Compaq 7585 page .

Mikey edit: it seems the system doesn't recognize the sound card , or that it's even there.

@#$%^ !!!! How in the heck did you get the "cabs" entry??? Boot into SAFE MODE, go into Device Manager and REMOVE anything under "Sound" that says "ESS" and/or "Allegro"! Reboot, let it find the dang thing again.

Ohhh, yes it does, just not functioning! Oh, and "SNDVOL32.EXE" better be in the Windows folder!

And answer these questions, PLEASE! I NEED TO KNOW!

1 - EXACT model of PC (on the back)

2 - Does your floppy work now, i.e. do you have a floppy disk, can insert it, and maybe format it? Let's confirm you have a floppy drive...

3 - Have you yet "browsed around" in your BIOS (that IS your BIOS that you access using was it F2?). If there's something in there that we can "disable" (e.g. MPU401,COM1, and Printer), then you will have some free IRQ's (I noted you use a USB Printer, right?). REMEMBER if you "browse" in there, select "Exit Without Save" Function Key (or whatever)...

-- In other words, what does NOT have something "plugged in"???

WE NEED FREE RESOURCES so what you DO use can be re-assigned! NOTICE that the BIOS usually allows for re-assigning SOME items then Windows will use what the BIOS said to use!!!

edit - maybe this better be taken off-line (eg via e-mail or IM...) this topic is getting CLOBBERED!

Is the floppy controler still disabled? If so, re-enable it.

Does the floppy attempt to work when you try to boot from it or open the drive in Explorer/DOS (i.e. floppy light flashing, mechanical noises, spins the diskette) or it remains dead? Could be a cabling problem. Did it ever worked in the past?

About the sound, are the ESS-related lines in config.sys and autoexec.bat currently enabled? If not, restore these lines and check the sound in Multimedia control panel applet again.

Also, would you start Aida32, open the Information menu > Debug submenu > Devices Dump, copy the contents and post it here. Should help to identify the hardware.

I discovered that about a year after I bought it.

never needed a floppy

I use my burner (a lot)

Are there any specific patches or service paks that address startup /hanging issues with 98se.??
I have an early Pent 4 running 98se. I have intermittent problem with the computer hanging half way to start.
Lately it's become more pronounced. I then reboot in safe mode,then do a complete scandisk and defrag.
The problem seems to go away (for awhile or...day/month/week).
I always defrag usually daily before shut down and scandisk at least once a week.
I run various anti-virus and anti-spyware programs as well.
I am behind a password protected router.
Any suggestions or comments would be welcome.

Hi there, you've had lots of replies to this, which is good, but as you can see, i'm replying to your first post, because i'm not happy with the course of the help you've received. One of the likely scenarios to answer the question: "what is wrong with my machine" is that you have a "very damaged windows" (which is one of the replies you got) but this was never followed up. You've tested the hardware, and if all the results are clean and the computer is not behaving as intended, you have a Screwed Operating System that Needs Re-Installing. In my experience, you can waste WEEKS of your life trying to fix a problem that can be solved in less than one hour. And that is re-installing the OS. It only takes one incompatible system event to crash Windows 98 or make it behave in an excruciating manner.

So, please, more info on the state of the OS ... how old is it? When was it installed? How much change has it seen? Ie how many programs have been installed and uninstalled (a few, many?) -- but we only need this if you have a good reason why you'd prefer to not to re-install.

As you are probably painfully aware, a week is far too long to be trying to fix Windows. Get good at re-installing the OS and you will live longer due to less stress.

Thanks for the sage advice! In my case, I have no program disk, so it's either buy 89se or upgrade to another OS. Otherwise I would have F DISK long ago.

Also , it started up as (I thought) a small problem, and as things went on it kinda took on a life iof its own

Feel free to read through all this mess and contribute any other thoughts , If you wish.

Submix and Rainy Shadow have been helping me, and at this point I'm reluctant to 'have more cooks in the kitchen"

Hey RS , thanks for checking back...We are almost done , most everything is solved.

Only port/IRQ issues and sound driver problems remain.

Submix is working on the Aida32 report as we speak.

I could send you a copy , but ..I think submix is going to take this to a successful conclusion.

I'll let you guys know the outcome, but rest assured, it's been a journey
