I dont see how that is possible, I think you are measuring wrong.

Is this Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security, Other?

Norton AV is not just one process, there are multiple, add them up and compare it to the cumulative total of other AV and you will know the difference. :)

Use Process Explorer and note all the 'Symantec' processes.

do me a favor an download http://www.angryziber.com/ipscan/download.php (direct link http://ipscan.sourceforge.net/ipscan.exe ) and scan it an tell me if norton still hasnt gotten the message that angry IP is not an unwanted program.

Seriously, I would appreciate it if you would test that out for me because im curious but not curious enough to pay symantec to find out

http://liveupdate.symantec.com/upgrade/NIS081500.exe (61MB)

I will test it in a vm and post a screenshot of all the Norton processes and test the Angry IP Scanner.

NOTE: Windows Task Manager is misleading in terms of real memory usage. It is only showing the "working set" of the process, which in laymans terms is memory the program asks for, not what it is actually using/needs. "Private Bytes" shows how much the program is currently using and has reserved. (if anyone wants to explain this better, or correct me, please do)

Total Running Processes: 4 (run update though or let it scan and the number increase like crazy, over 10 in my test)

Total Working Set: 45188K (first run, live update), 6208K (idle)

Total Private Bytes: 121228K (first run, live update), 89448K (idle)

Conclusion: Definetly a step in the right direction for Norton, it is demanding less than previous versions. However Norton is still the most demanding AV I know of and is not a leader in effectiveness and security.

Norton also detected Angry IP Scanner a few seconds after I dropped it into the vm; this is a false positive. Programs like Norton like to make you think they are protecting you, by over reacting at harmless things, this tends to understate significant issues.
