DPInst device driver install

Hi,

I am having problems installing device drivers for Windows Vista 32 & 64 bit.

I have an installation pkg which consists of

  • .cat file
  • .inf file
  • .sys file
  • .dll file
  • .cer file

I have digitally signed the driver with authenticode and created an install .exe file with IExpress (DPInst).

I figured that this was the easiest way to create a install .exe

I install the driver two different ways

Method 1: Using Device Mgr

I go into device Mgr, click browse, select the correct folder, hit install.

A message comes up asking me, am i sure i want to install the SIGNED driver, I say YES, and then its installed.

This is cumbersome, and difficult for an ordinary user, therefore, I use:

Method 2: Using Using IExpress created EXE

I simply double click, I get an error about my UNSIGNED driver.

The driver installs, but when I look in the setupapi.dev.log file, it says that the driver is not signed, and the .cat file cannot be found.

My questions are:

Whats happening in IExpress. Is my cat file really included.

Should i be just using DPInst. I couldn't find any real HOW-TO documentation for using it. Just the usual Microsoft docs.

Why is my cat file, and signed driver package not recognized by the installation exe.

Any help would be much appreciated.
