XP Not recognising USB storage devices

I've Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 on a HP desktop machine which is just 3 years old.

If I plug in a 64MB memory stick it works fine.

I now find that larger USB memory devices such as 4GB memory stick or a 500GB external hard drive will not work. Windows recognises that a USB mass storage is plugged in but pops up a screen asking for a driver. No driver is available for these as the devices expect XP to recognise them.

All other USB devices including iPOds etc work fine.

Help!!!!
