Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE

Recommended Posts

Okay, I was *ALMOST* toying with the idea of revamping this entire list, slogging through all 36 pages... including the Mount Everest of stuff on page one. But, genealogy software? Updaters? CAD programs? Time Synchronisation utilities?

Jeepers! Does anyone use that stuff? I'm not going to spend my time searching the web looking for the final version of an atomic clock that works on Windows 98!! LOL.

After checking, a lot of those links (on page 1) are just obsolete. Also, when I tried to paste all the URL's onto notepad, half the addresss are truncated due to formatting, and therefore wouldn't work. I'd have to manually copy and paste each URL individually... and verify them... there's hundreds of them!

Seriously. The only way to do this, would be to start over from scratch. I'm by no means suggesting getting rid of, or replacing this thread, but it's too big to edit at this point.

Maybe if it was broken down into smaller chunks. One thread for Disc burning/ripping software. Another for, say, internet utilities: browsers, plugins, etc. Another thread for all sorts of anti-malware/virus tools. Another for Audio players/editors.

Personally, I'd prefer to make the Picture Viewer, and MP3 Player, and Archiver/Zipper thread :-) Those are the software I use mostly.

If anyone was going to do this, I would suggest starting off something like this:

You can "collect" several posts at once using "MultiQuote". I don't know if there is a limit, but I'm sure it should at least handle 10 or more posts at once. Once you have the posts you "collected" in the edit box, then toggle into BBCode mode by clicking the little unnamed button in the top left of the edit box directly above the B ie "bold" button. That will expose all of the BBCode in the post and none of the addresses will be truncated anymore. Then you can copy all of the text in the edit box with CTRL-A - CTRL-C and paste it into the text editor of your choice. Continue this way until you have collected all the links in the thread. If you use an editor that can use regular expressions, then it should be fairly straight forward to parse out the links and sort them if you like. To verify the links, one way that comes to mind would be to turn them into bookmarks and use one of the various free software options that can verify bookmarks such as AM-Deadlink, which should work for Win2K and above. I think it can also verify links just in a text file, but I have only used it to verify bookmarks. At that point you should be left with a list of valid links. Then all you have to do (heh-heh) is determine if they are for the latest version that works with Win98 or not. For software whose links were no longer valid, I suppose you could try to find new links through the wayback machine or other means.

Cheers and Regards

Well, at this point, I've done a few scans through the "Last Versions" thread... collected most of the software titles and links. Went over all the links on page #1 numerous times, counting how many broken links are on there (lots of them). A lot of those anti-virus and security links are totally gone (Symantec tools for example), not to mention you can't purchase a lot of those $$$$ programs anymore. You'd have to track them down through different channels, used, or on Ebay. Good luck! Kinda pointless at this point.... as time marches on.

I've tried to avoid any $$$ programs on my new list, as those types of things are the quickest to disappear.

I'm going to keep checking this thread, because I've probably skipped some things.

And whatever thread people post their software in, I'm going to try and keep my thread updated and fresh. Take it easy fellow Win9x users :-)

What else was I goign to say... oh yeah. Some of the programs that were listed as ONGD ceased supporting Win9x. The link takes you to their website but the file you download no longer is supported on Win9x. As it stands, there's no place to find the previous version that worked on Win9x. Therefore, those programs are lost. Unless they show up someplace like Oldapps.com or somebody kept a copy :-/

I actually just took a ride back to 2010 with the Wayback Machine and some if not all of the links will work. There seem to be programs online that attest to URL validation but I don't know if any of them automatically correct them. I have limited time testing right now because the Archive is so slow and I'm heading to bed soon. This 2010 link is the first day that was archived for this thread. The first Apple link on that page doesn't work, but you can use OldApps or OldVersion for that.

http://web.archive.org/web/20100221075812/http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/105936-last-versions-of-software-for-windows-98se

The second link for DirectX. That link works because the file itself is actually archived on the Wayback Machine. If you follow it through the Wayback Machine that link (the second one) links to http://web.archive.org/web/20100221075812/http://www.free-codecs.com/DivX_Free_download.htm which then links to http://web.archive.org/web/20100114163106/http://free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=3300&s=40 which then ULTIMATELY links to http://web.archive.org/web/20100114163106/http://ftp.freenet.de/pub/filepilot/windows/multimedia/video/divx/DivX521XP2K.exe

Note: if you open the page in the Wayback Machine using the 2010 link I provided above, you can easily recover the links without dots by viewing the page source after opening the page.

<OFF TOPIC COMMENT>

I used this specific method with the Wayback Machine a few weeks ago for someone that needed to download Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows XP which Microsoft no longer posts for download on XP systems.

The current page no longer works on XP stating it is no longer available for download, but the archived page contains the archived files. Then you just  click on Get it Now and proceed to the next page, selecting English Windows XP 32 bit and downloading it. There is also a 64 bit version available.

ClamWin 0.98.5 Antivirus was just released today. Still works for Windows 98/ME.

Also, Ralph Roth released RHBVS back in November, if you need a heuristic scanner for DOS. He doesn't seem to update his program more than once a year nowadays.

No. It works, all right, but you don't want to do that! I've just downloaded it to check, and it's v. 4.6.305.0... That's one of the naggy versions: the last nagless version is 4.4.304.0, which can be found, for instance, on filehippo. After installing, take care to hide updates to it on MU, and disable any auto updating, and just update the virus definitions, or it'll become naggy, after being updated. More about it on this page, elsewhere, at dslreports.

I'll add that the current version of the Nettalk IRC client (6.7.16) works on Windows 98 SE.

Only issue is that the icons look bad compared to how they look on later Windows versions, otherwise works just fine.

Website: http://www.ntalk.de/Nettalk/en

Also, the latest version of HxD Hex Editor (1.7.7.0) works on Windows 98 SE.

And will someone PLEASE update the outdated list on the first page of this thread! :angrym:

A couple of small, minimalist MP3 Players... ones I've never heard of before... all freeware

(1) Ho MP3 Player 2.0

A nice clean interface, no skins (thank goodness), includes a play list editor. Nice program.

ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/sound/homp3.zip

(2) VinAmp 1.5 (yes, that's a "V" not a "w")

This is a nice little program. No BS crap like so many mp3 players. Simple.

ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/sound/vinamp.zip

(3) Diegote MP3 Player

All it does is allow you to open an MP3 and play a single file at a time. I suppose if you hate Windows Media Player, you could use this thing :-) Funny looking interface.
