Hi ... can someone please clear up this Java thing for me. What is the actual last version that works with Windows 98SE ? In the "Last Versions List" this is what is said:

LAST - FREE - Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 17 (1.6.0.07 works) --- http://java.com

Is version 5.0 update 17 the real last version or is v1.6.0.07 .... should that v5.0 be v1.5 or something ? How do we go from v5.0 back down to v1.6.

File Hippo lists JRE v1.6.0.2 as the last version for "ALL" Windows.

Awhile back I downloaded the Java SE Runtime Environment v5.0 Update 15 version, I thought I read that this might be the real last version that really worked with no problems. would this version be OK to just hold onto ... I can't seem to find the Update 17 ... but then my question from above ... How do we go from ver 5.0 back down to ver 1.6 ?

So again, can someone tell me what is the last version that really works with Win 98SE so I can download it and put it away. I have never understood the Java thing ... if you can add a few lines or reasons ... do I really need it on my machine ? ... but I still want to store it on a CD, just in case.

It's Sun, they re-named their Java JRE editions from 6.0 to 1.6.x.x, but it's the same thing.

It is recommened to install the newest available, because 6.0.x [1.6] editions [besides new features + capabilities] have all bug-fixes from all other older editions, including 5.0.x [1.5], 4.0.x [1.4], 3.0.x [1.3], etc...

Also, Flash 10.0.22.87 Plugin and Standalone are available.

I'm also running the 10.0.22.87 Standalone player in 98SE okay.

I have KernelEx installed, so I'm not sure if v10 works without KernelEx.

Can anyone confirm this?

If there are install issues that require a clean install, then download the Flash uninstaller for both ActiveX and Plugin:

Anyone that happens to be using Symantec AntiVirus 9.x Corporate (and Enterprise) Edition will have a problem after the end of this month...

Symantec is retiring SAV 9.x Corporate/Enterprise Editions with End-Of-Life as March 31, 2009.

From then on, they will no longer release legacy definitions.

As a side note, it appears that all remaining 9x compatible antivirus vendors will be dropping support for Windows 9x at the end of this year. :(

EDIT March 8: According to this Avast! Forum topic, it looks like at least Avast! will be supporting their current 4.8 version for 9x users for some time to come...

This is a very actively developed, very frequently updated, rather feature loaded, portable audio player with a minimalistic user interface, written entirely in AHK (hard to believe, but it's true!). There are no silly skins with this player. And it has some tricks you may not have seen in other players before.

It was released as part of DonationCoder.com's New Apps for the New Year event (NANY 2009) and has quickly developed a rabid userbase of creative fans. I am one of them. This is my player of choice on both my XP and WinME machines.

I have an 11 year old, 233mhz, 64mb RAM, WinME machine on 33.6k dialup. I know the developer and am one of those that conducts 9x testing for him, prior to release of any feature he is unsure if it will work on 9x or a really slow PC. (I eagerly volunteered for that job) He does his own testing in a Win98SE VM, but since he doesn't have a real 9x machine, ME, dialup, or a really slow PC, that's where I come in handy.

Trout has a few very minor 9x issues (no tag editing, for instance) but the developer listens and tries like heck to make us Trout users as happy as he can, including those on 9x.

Last.fm support in general was because I asked for it.

Last.fm support on 9x was because I begged him for it. When I told him how much I loved that site and was almost completely forced off it when my XP machine died last year (took me a long time till I could afford to replace it), and how I would have killed for a 9x compatible player that supported scrobbling to last.fm, I managed to convince him that trying to support 9x was worth the extra effort.

You can also be part of the development process if you wish too, by providing feedback, bug reports, and feature requests. Let your imagination fly and not only can this become the best audio player for 9x, it can become the best on any version of Windows.

I previously tried and failed to run v10 without KernelEx, so I would say no. You would need v9 if you don't have KernelEx.
