HOWTO create a fully up to date XP x64 DVD (EoL Feb 2016)

Kurt_Aust

Recommended Posts

OldNewb, some suggestions and questions:

  • Write DVD at the lowest speed. You may be burning a bad disc.
  • Are you using nLite to burn DVD - I assume so?
  • Try another program to write DVD - such as ImgBurn.
  • How large is your source folder after running nLite?
  • Have you tried running nLite against your CD and burning a DVD with no changes at all?

I have used DVD since my XP x64 ISO was so large but when it got to a certain size (my source is 2.6 GB now), nLite did create a good image. You can also try the alternate builder on the Create Bootable ISO page (see pull down list.) I just went to ImgBurn and have had no problems since with XP or W7.

Please let us know what you learn. Enjoy, John.

EDIT: Also be sure to use Verify whatever burn SW you use.

Have finally figured out what the problem is.

The new (2 months old) Samung DVD drive I have is faulty or cannot be controlled by the BIOS on my Asus A8N-Sli Premium mobo!

I plugged in an old LG drive and everything works just fine. I don't yet understand how the Samsung drive works under a VM but not when controlled by the BIOS but am waiting on a reply from Asus and from Samsung.

Thank you again Kurt, 5eraph and johnhc for your suggestions and please accept my apologies if I wasted your time. :}

That's good to hear, OldNewb. I had that very motherboard a couple years ago, but with a Pioneer DVD burner (no related problems). It was a bit twitchy with video, though (occasional green noise in SLI mode with two GeForce 7800s). nForce4 chipsets are known to have problems on the PCI bus, especially when dealing with Creative X-Fi cards (stuttering and noise in general). You may want to consider another chipset.

No apology needed here. I've learned something.

Hi 5eraph - was unaware that nForce4 chipsets were problematic. Have to say the only time I had a problem was when I installed XP x64 with my X-Fi Extreme Music card already installed. Then I got clicks and random noises but when I installed the card after I had installed XP x64 there was no problem.

I am looking to upgrade my system in the next few months. Any mobo recommendations?

A note on KB956744 (MS09-044):

It appears that KB2481109 (MS11-017) effectively replaces KB956744 as if KB2481109 is applied to KB925876, Windows Update feels that KB956744 is no longer needed. That is, if RDC 6.0 is upgraded to RDC 6.1 a vulnerability in RDC 6.0 on longer needs to be patched. However 5eraph feels

That may be an issue with the Microsoft Update website. KB956744 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956744) updates msrdp.cab in "%SystemRoot%\Web\TSWeb" and adds registry entries that are not included in KB2481109 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2481109).

In fact, KB2481109 almost completely replaces the original installer for RDP6 (KB925876 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925876)-v2). The only things missing from the newer package are the CHM help files.

so for now it will remain in the list.

Notes:

Yipe, well that has to set some sort of record, hopefully the next couple of months will be somewhat quieter. Considering the rate at which bugs are being found in Adobe flash player, I'm beginning to think that Steve Jobs has a point, of course it might just be I'm a tad annoyed that I'd only just updated all the computers at work and uploaded the hotfix archives when I found out that yet another flash patch was coming.

KB956744 (MS09-044) has been removed as the relevant page now notes that KB2481109 (MS11-017) obsoletes it on Server 2003 x64.

Dropped Opera again as the developers can't seem to settle on a set of silent install switches.

Thanks, Kurt_Aust. I think your new C++ files have been superseded. I just did an install of my W7 on VM with these then ran Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.2. It found later versions for 2005 and 2008 of KB2467175 and KB2467174, respectively. Please let me know if you disagree. Thanks, John.

A couple of errors crept into this months update list:

  • KB956744 (MS09-044) is in fact still needed, on Friday I got an automated email from Microsoft stating that it wasn't needed then on Sunday I got another email stating that it was. If you used UpdatePrep.bat to clean up your hotfix list it should be in the Misc folder, just move it back to RunOnce.
  • I pasted the wrong direct download links for the updated versions of the Visual C++ 2008 sp1 runtimes. I normally click on the links to check that I put in the right one, but when all the C++ runtimes have the same filename, it makes it possible to miss that you got it wrong.
  • For some reason the 32-bit version of the updated Visual C++ 2005 sp1 runtime doesn't install correctly (unlike all previous versions). One has to install the previous version (KB973544) and then install the current version (KB2467175) over it.

To make it easier to keep the current versions of the Visual C++ runtimes organised, I'm changing the naming convention. When updates come the new files will have their trailing letter advanced. As the 2005 & 2008 Visual C++ sp1 runtimes are on at least their 2nd update they are in the form vcredist_x**_200*_sp1b.exe. The current Visual C++ runtimes files are:
    @ vcredist_x86_2005sp1a.exe . . . 2,745,256 Visual C++ 2005 SP1 32-bit Must be manually renamed

It seems that there are some major issues with the recently released Visual C++ redistributables, most notably that they break applications on Windows 2000 but there are plenty of other problems as well, hence I expect that they will be re-released at some stage (hopefully before the next patch Tuesday).

On further investigation QuickTime Lite was wiping out the latest VC++ 2005 sp1 update, but the workaround given of installing the previous version as well works for now, although you could dump the previous version and modify Run2_XP-64.bat instead (if there's no fix before then, this change will be in next month's update):

%Source%AddOns\QT_Lite-410.exe /Silent /NoRestart
If exist %Source%AddOns\QT_Lite-410.exe %Source%RunOnce\vcredist_x86_2005sp1b.exe /Q

directx_Jun2010_redist.exe was re-released on the 18th of April, but if you already have it there is no need to redownload it.

Applications and other changes:

Kelsenellenelvian has released a new version of his x64 CPL bonus pack, it now integrates correctly.

Added Libre Office, the community fork of Open Office.

Moved MenuReorg.bat to \Misc and added a custom boot.ini to \Misc, if they are moved to \Addons they will be implemented.

Will now defrag %SystemDrive% by default if NOT a VirtualBox install.

Removed the poll for now in order to reset it.

I will be away from the 25th of May until the 15th of June, so the next update will be a bit late.

Have tried several days but the torrent appears to be unavailable.

Has 18 peers but nothing else.

John

As noted above I'm currently away and won't get home until the 17th, also as I suffered a hard drive failure just before leaving (thankfullly my backup was current) I will have to rebuild my system before updating the post and torrent for June.

Thanks for the info Kurt.

Know the feeling of the hard drive problem all to well. That's the reason of having to rebuild this x64 system for my son. Take your time no rush as the kid is off for summer vacation from school plus if he really needs a computer we have others in the house.

Thanks Again for the Great Work!!

As expected this month's update is a tad late, mainly due to 3 factors:

  • I only got home from an overseas trip on the 17th.
  • On getting home I had to first rebuild my system after a hard drive failure / broken array (and there are few things more terrifying than a string of BIOS beeps when doing a system rebuild).
  • As seen above there were quite a few updates this month.

I can't be the only one to have noticed a definite cadence to Microsoft's patch cycle of late, very quiet one month, absolutely hectic the next.
