Witch 3 party firewall is compatible with Vista?

The firewall built into windows is pretty comprehensive. But you should have a hardware firewall.

This would be a cable/dsl router. Searching for that should get you more then enough product results.

Having one of these has several benefits.

Filters traffic at a hardware level. Free's up your computer from having to process all those packets to determine whether or not to let it in.

Forces you to explicitly open ports on the front end. Unless your applications are all uPnP, then you'll have to make the consious effort to open up the ports. This might seem like a drag, but it's easy, and it's a good additional way to make you ask yourself if this is really the right thing I should be doing.

In my opinion, the windows firewall is a good last ditch defense against internal network worms if something does get through to another machine. In my case my wife has a tendancy to download nasty things. So the firewall on my box helps keep me clean :)

Standard Vista Firwall and Windows Defender

aVast antivirus
