Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 failed!

Recommended Posts

Just so we're clear on what eyeball is asking you to do...you need to extract the SP2 package and run update.exe manually. By default when you run a hotfix or service pack without extracting it, it automatically uses the (local) drive with the most available space. To extract the package, run this command:

WindowsServer2003-KB914961-SP2-x86-ENU.exe /X:C:\Srv03SP2

Once you do that then run this:

I followed your steps and even got the Inspecting your system window and got to click 'Next' twice, but then I got again:

"The Service Pack2 c:\SP2\i366\update\update.inf file is not correct"

This is the head of that update.inf file: Not sure if this can help in any way. Thanks

This installation is NOT altered in any way. I'm just clicking on the Windows Update link and I have also downloaded the file to my HD and tried running it from there. As I indicated above I'm still getting the same error. thanks

Here's a workaround:

1) Back up all your data first 'cause if this doesn't work, you've gone from being inconvenienced to being in deep doo-doo. If you're not willing to take that risk, stop here. Otherwise, read on.

2) Slipstream SP2 on your installation media.

3) Do an in-place upgrade. That should repair whatever files are messed up as well as upgrade you to SP2. If you have IE7 installed on your machine, then you will need to slipstream that on your installation media as well or you'll REALLY have problems...

one other idea i had was to reinstall com. you can do this by editing sysoc.inf, removing the hide from

Then use add/remove windows components and uncheck and check it to reinstall com

Another possible option is to reset the default permissions using setup security.inf, which is a dynamic file created by xp setup.

microsoft does email support, you can try that.
