Windows Xp Setup Error!

Recommended Posts

Q817778 installed ok with the /Q /U /N /Z switches under VPC on my machine.

Congratulations: If you installed from either the CMDLINES.TXT or the SVCPACK.INF section, you are the first I have heard of to succeed. If it was from the RunOnce section ...

@bjdotcom: You need the extracted version: QCHAIN.EXE inside of QCHAIN.EXE. It will take a while at the T-13 mark: that is where all we add happens. 817778.EXE needs the Explorer Shell to be loaded to run correctly, and this is not the case until the system reboots after the T-39 to T - 1 countdown.

Hi Greenmachine,

I did it again tonight using VMware and same result, it installed ok :)

I am using the Svcpack method to do my install with rollup slipstreamed.

Cheers,

I was not being sarcastic, and now I am jealous.

I don't remember so well: I played with that update for a couple of days, and it never worked right. Do you do anything special? Have you slipstreamed SP1 or SP1a? Are your hotfixes installed in any special order? Is this one near the begining or the end? Are you using the standard SVCPACK.INF method outlined by Aaron? Is there a clue you can give me as to why you can do it, and I cannot? XP Home or Pro? Corporate, retail, or OEM?

Has anyone else got this working OK? I have only seen problems with it here.

I didn't take your comment as sarcasm, I hadn't seen all the other posts about Q817778 until about 15 mins ago.

I have slipstreamed SP1a into XP Pro Corp and all hotfixes are installed in numerical order.

I am using Aarons method for svcpack.inf and also installing nearly all of the recommended updates this way as well.

The MDAC update is being installed via the $oem$\install\hotfixes folder.

I don't think I have done anything out of the ordinary with the install, it just worked.

When I saw bjdotcom's post I had to comment as I could tell it wasn't being installed for everyone.

Below is my svcpack.inf

I hope you can make use of it :)

Cheers,

At one point during the hotfixes installation a message box appears asking me to specify a folder to extract some files. After hitting OK (the default directory is C:\WINDOWS\system32\......) I get "Files Extracted" and the installation continues.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? :)
