Static IP

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I don't have a static IP, but I could easily get one off my ISP.

I know all the Pros with it, and i'm considerign setting up a FTP server with my new NAS box, obviosuly this is 100x better with a static IP.

Any advice with it, due to hackers etc, I have a NAT router, and a firewall on all my PC's...any advice beofe i get a static IP?

I dont see the problem with having a static ip, they are obviously needed if you have an email server, or web server or something but you could get around thus with dynamic dns, anyway i would go for it if you have a NAT firewall/router running all ports in stealth you will be pretty much invisible anyway, you could take extra measures however such as making the user for your ftp server some randomly generated alpha-numeric string, and you could change the password and username frequently.

but anyway in answer to your question, if you take proper security measures i cannot see any downside to having one :)

cheers for the reply :)

Like i say, my Router is NAT enabled, firewalls on all PC's, and all devices password protected.

If there any other saety precautions i could make, im open to suggestions :P
